Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Taylor.
Hi Sarah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
As cliché as this might sound, I’m just a girl from a small town in Texas. But it wasn’t just any small town for me. My mother’s side of the family owns a fairly large farm in Vernon, Tx and I had the privilege of growing up on it. I couldn’t be more grateful for this experience because, at a young age, I learned the value of hard work and was fortunate enough to have sisters and cousins who were all super close and taught me the value of being kind and honest. A lot can be learned from observing a farmer, like how when you plant seeds, you don’t see the rewards of your work right away. And in fact, you continue to work for months on end tending to your crops, watering them, preventing insects and animals from harming them, getting little sleep, and simply having faith that what you have sowed is growing under the surface even though you can’t see the evidence yet. (Living by faith, not by sight) I didn’t realize it then, but this lesson has gotten me through and given me strength in times of my own personal trials.
I moved to Nashville back in 2010 in pursuit of a music career, and it would take much more than the time I have in this interview to even scratch the surface of every step, lesson, triumph, failure, and moments of defeat that occurred between then and now. I’ve trusted people that promised things they couldn’t deliver on, put every ounce of time and energy into chasing this dream, became ultimately homeless, and lost everything MORE than once. But these “failures” became some of my biggest assets and have made me into the strong, confident woman, artist, writer, and creator that I am today. I believe that if you have a purpose and believe in that purpose with all your heart, failure will not stop you, but instead light a fire under you. And that in most cases, if you change your attitude, things around you will begin to change. (I’m also a little stubborn if you haven’t gathered that by now haha).
So that brings me to where I am now, lucky enough to be working with some amazing people who believe in and support my vision. I love writing music and being able to see it come to life in studio. This creative process is my absolute favorite! We are also working on my live show and aim to be opening for a tour taking place in the fall. A lot of work has gone into creating the sound, the vibe, the look, the logo, the merch, and the message that I want to portray in my brand. So finally, being able to see a pathway to sharing it with people is SO exciting! I always want to make sure that I am putting out something of substance that feels genuine and relatable.
I also have a passion for writing children’s books and am working on a pretty exciting project for my first one, TINY THE STINKBUG. I’ll be excited when I’m able to share a little more on that subject. But I love anything that can make you laugh and teach you a lesson at the same time.
I am also co-hosting a new morning show called Only Good Things that will take place on a social media platform. It’s live, unfiltered, and a lot of fun. So, I am looking forward to seeing the opportunities and discussions that our new show will bring.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It would be easy to say that being Pop in a Country city, or a female artist in such a competitive space is the most difficult challenge but honestly, just keeping up with how quickly the industry is changing is so difficult.
The last 4 years especially have changed everything. Independent artists can be discovered on platforms like TikTok and Instagram and have a song go to number 1 on iTunes without ever speaking to a record label. New platforms launch every day and now breaking a new single is about how good your social media game is more than anything else. Constantly staying up to date on all of that stuff is a little crazy.
Speaking of that, follow me on Instagram @sarahtaylormusic! 😉
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
One of my biggest passions is definitely creating music. I am an indie-pop artist and my vibe has been described as Modern Pop that emphasizes honest heartfelt lyrics and delicate vocals. There is definitely a little bit of an 80’s influence on a lot of my production. Something about that throwback sound is just fun! I love music that can relate to what you’re going through, calm you down, and make you want to dance all at the same time. I like storytelling and enjoy being able to incorporate that into my music as well. Writing and recording music gives me the opportunity to be the soundtrack to the moments in someone’s life that will have impact. I love the idea that something I write or perform will be forever joined to love stories and break-ups, big wins and crushing losses, and that it might be the thing that turns someone’s day around and makes the world seem a little more hopeful.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
One of my favorite Instagram accounts that I follow is @case.kenny. I just like the positivity that he puts out. Our view of ourself is really everything, and he tends to remind people of that. I often repost a lot of his quotes on my own story.
The one book that has really influenced me this last year is CHANGE YOUR PARADIGM, CHANGE YOUR LIFE, by Bob Proctor. I listen to a portion of the audible almost every day actually. It’s just a good reminder for me to really focus on my attitude and what I’m putting out into the world. There really is power and potential in every single one of us that we often fail to recognize. Incorporating some of the exercises that he talks about in the book in my daily routine has absolutely started to shift, not only my perception on dealing with problems and specific circumstances but my ability to capitalize on opportunities and to begin to create the life I want.
