Exploring Life & Business with Sarah Coleman Zurhellen of Sarah Coleman Interiors

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Coleman Zurhellen.

Sarah Coleman, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have had a love for interior design for as long as I can remember!

Growing up in an old historic home in Alabama, I was always dreaming up renovation ideas and even sketching out floor plans. I was constantly rearranging the furniture in my room and will never forget a day spent browsing fabrics and designing a custom headboard with my mom.

I knew I wanted to be an interior designer, but my story is no straight shot! I attended the University of Alabama where I graduated with a degree in accounting. I even continued on to get a master’s degree in accounting (I know, not what you were expecting!). I guess you could say I decided to take the “safe route” – a business degree. After college, I moved to Atlanta and started my career in public accounting. I realized rather quickly that this was definitely not the path for me and began on a journey of “trying out” new career options. Through quite a few job changes, my passion for design stayed with me and I decided to take a leap of faith! I enrolled in design courses at the Atlanta campus of SCAD and took an intern position working for a designer. A few years later, my path landed me in Nashville, which is where I started Sarah Coleman Interiors!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been quite the journey getting to this point, but when I look back on my winding path, it somehow all makes sense! It was one of my greatest struggles to find the right career path. I believe that each individual experience I had before deciding to pursue a career in design has prepared me for this opportunity! Looking back, I am thankful for how I got here!

I would also say there have been a few challenges related to the timing of starting my own business in 2020 – YEP, in the middle of a pandemic! I am challenged every day and constantly learning how to be a better business owner and designer!

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Sarah Coleman Interiors is a Nashville based interior design studio specializing in residential design throughout the Southeast. I have been working independently on projects ranging from furnishings and styling to renovations and construction. Growing up, I was surrounded by southern influences which shine through in my work. I love finding ways to mix traditional and contemporary elements. It is my goal to bring my client’s vision for their home to life by adding my own perspective, creating a personalized and unique space, with a strong emphasis on function. I am so excited to continue on this journey and watch how SCI grows in 2022!

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I have been blessed to have many supporters and cheerleaders along the way!

I have to give credit to my husband, Logan, for supporting me each and every step of the way! He has supported our family through the roller coaster that is starting your own business! I truly could not do what I do without him.

I am so thankful for the clients I have worked with this past year! It is such an honor to work in such a sacred place – your home. Thank you for trusting me with something so special!
