Meet Josh Shaw

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Shaw.

Hi Josh, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up 30 minutes north of Nashville in Gallatin, TN. My passion for being behind the camera began at an early age, watching my father capture every moment of me and my sister’s childhood.

While in college, I worked at an Apple store in Birmingham, AL. As an employee, I would instruct customers on how to use iMovie to edit thier home movies together. While working there, I was introduced to two gentlemen who worked as freelance videographers; and from that we began talking about the opportunities that were available in the freelance video world. That conversation sparked the idea — the idea that I could turn my passion into my career.

In 2009, I left Birmingham to move back to Nashville, to pursue my passion full time.

I was able to connect with a company in Nashville that advanced me some funding needed in exchange for services, and I used those funds to purchase the initial equipment I needed. That small amount of money [for them] would turn out to be one of the biggest investments that has gotten me to this point.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The biggest challenge for me in getting started was not having a true portfolio or body of work to attract the clientele I knew I needed to be sustainable.

Upon moving back to Nashville, from college in Alabama, I had to hustle to film a lot of low-budget projects to first — get more experience, and second — build a visual resume.

With video, just like photography, clients want to see your work as part of their purchasing decision. I didn’t have anything to show visually, but I did have the confidence that I could execute.

That confidence is what led to me being able to get into some rooms that I didn’t belong in at the time, which ultimately led to me getting to where I am today.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am the founder and owner of Modern Innovation Production.

Modern Innovation Production (MIP) is a creative agency, with clients across multiple industries and video production company dedicated to bringing client visions to life through stories. The company is headquartered in Nashville, TN, and produces campaigns for clients across the country.

Our motto is “Your Vision. Our Lens.” With clients across multiple industries, we are expert storytellers with a passion for diverse, driven clients.

I am best known for my work in the educational arena, producing stories and commercial ads that enhance the brand awareness of universities, private high schools, and sports programs. My other clientele includes brand storytelling and corporate marketing for venture-backed tech startups and fortune 500 enterprises.

What I am most proud of is my commitment to building long-lasting relationships with my clients. It’s my goal to produce stories that matter, content that inspires action or power movements that have an opportunity to make a positive impact on the world.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory is my love for legos. When I speak to people, I often make the connection that video production is similar to lego building.

To most people, a pile of blocks looks like a pile of blocks, but how you place and configure that pile is what makes the final piece special. The same thing with video, to most people, when you look at a lot of clips on an editing timeline, that’s all it is, an assortment of clips, but it’s how you edit those clips together that tell the lasting story.
