Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma Rowley.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always been incredibly passionate about singing and performing. At thirteen years old, I made my Broadway debut in the 2009 Patti Lupone revival of Gypsy. I went on to twice perform with the New York Pops Orchestra at Carnegie Hall and then signed on for the 2009 John Stamos Broadway revival of Bye Bye Birdie. With that production, I had the opportunity to appear on both Good Morning America and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. It was a dream come true!
When the curtain came down on Bye Bye Birdie’s closing night, I found myself at a crossroads. I had started learning how to play guitar and was thoroughly enjoying trying my hand at songwriting. Taylor Swift was just beginning to really break through and I was so inspired by her. I thought the fact that she could accompany herself on guitar was very cool. I also always loved to make up songs for fun as a kid so seeing someone so close to my age do it seriously inspired me to grow more passionate about it. I started connecting with other songwriters online, made a YouTube channel, and began dreaming of moving to Nashville. I made that dream a reality when I began attending Nashville’s Belmont University. After four years, I earned my music degree and buckled down on pursuing my career as an alternative pop recording artist and songwriter.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I remember taking my final bow at the last Gypsy performance and asking myself, “Will I never do anything cool again? Did I use up all of my luck because I got to live out my childhood dream?” I was only thirteen at the time! I now believe we create our own luck and that the word luck stands for “Labor Under Correct Knowledge”. Every day is another chance to grow in our passions, prepare for future opportunities, and keep dreaming big dreams.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Over the last few years, I’ve focused on releasing new music and growing in my artistry. I’m currently focused on a collection of songs I can’t wait to release throughout 2022. I strive to create music that takes the listener on a relatable journey. Penning songs about universal experiences (beyond just romantic love) drives me as a songwriter and artist. Self-exploration, friendship, and personal growth are areas of life I focused on greatly in these new songs. I even harken back on my time spent performing on Broadway, living out my childhood dreams. I’ll have more details to share very soon!
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love how Nashville feels like a big town rather than a city. Just about everyone I meet in the music scene is so willing to collaborate. Also, the writer’s rounds and other performance opportunities have really helped me grow as an artist. I would love to see Nashville embrace and nurture more artists and musicians like myself who exist outside of the country genre.
