Daily Inspiration: Meet Jesse Sunga

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesse Sunga.

Hi Jesse, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in a musical household. My mother taught private piano/vocal lessons at home and my father showed me everything from the Allman Brothers to Willie Nelson, to Coltrane. At 5 my mother started teaching me piano and at 7 my parents gifted me a small acoustic guitar. Once I was taught chords, I started learning songs I loved. I was pretty much a bedroom player for over a decade. Around 2015 I started teaching myself how to play slide guitar. I loved it and became obsessed. I was asked to play a few songs in the band my uncle Will was in called Blue Mischief. I still remember the adrenaline rush of playing with a full band for the first time and I genuinely felt like I belonged on stage. So much so it redirected many of my life goals. Wanting more, I attended every open jam in Atlanta and played with as many people as possible. Eventually, I was asked to join Blue Mischief when their former guitar player decided to leave. After about 5 years playing around Atlanta, I set my sights to Nashville. February 2020, I made the move to Nashville. Perfect timing to experience the world shutting down. During quarantine I found myself practicing more than I ever had in my life. Now that things are slowly coming back to normal, I’ve been able to network around town and find myself more and more gigs.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely been more rough than smooth. I found that meeting other creatives is much more difficult via the internet rather than in person for me. Meeting people in person was virtually illegal during the heat of quarantine.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Playing slide guitar is what I specialize in. I love the sound of it and how challenging it can be. It’s surely gets the attention of many listeners and has given me many great opportunities.

What are your plans for the future?
Currently working on completing an album with Atlanta-based band “Staff”. We are an original Southern Rock/Soul band. Additionally, I have been writing a lot of songs for my own solo project which will be exciting. I do also freelance and will be playing a few gigs within the next few months: Feb 2 @ Twin Kegs II with the “Eastside Haulers”

March 11 @ Dee’s Country Cocktail Lounge with my good friend Clayton Colvin.
