Today we’d like to introduce you to Destiny Williams.
Hi Destiny, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In February of 2020, I married my husband, Daniel. Daniel also happens to be a photographer – and wanted me to pursue my creative side. He’d been teaching me the basics of the camera, lighting, framing, basically everything I needed to know to make this more than a hobby. After we married, I left my 9-5 to pursue photography full time. However, soon after we arrived home from our honeymoon covid hit the US and it seemed the world shut down. Trying to launch a photography business when everyone is scared to breathe near one another was definitely one of the more challenging tasks I’ve dealt with, but soon the weather warmed up and people were antsy to get back outside after being cooped up for months so bookings started. From one booking it seemed another came, and from that another.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not! As previously mentioned, Covid really was a challenge in the beginning, but also learning what does and does not need to be included in a contract, (and learning WHY having a contract for EVERY SESSION is so important!) and learning what is an appropriate amount to charge have been difficult. Also, there are a TON of photographers in the greater Nashville Area. Getting your name out there and making yourself the choice made by clients is always a fight it seems.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a Photographer. I do a little bit of everything from babies to product work, but I try to keep my main sessions portrait sessions. Whether that be headshots, creative portraiture, or family. I’m most proud of my creative portraiture work! I love being able to take the client out somewhere and have them do simple poses but making a beautiful photo of them. I believe my many years of customer service skills have really helped me develop the “how to be professional” quality, but I also have a knack for making friends with everyone I meet.
What’s next?
In the future, I’d love to help my husband grow his own photography business while still doing photography for myself even if on a smaller scale. Im currently in school pursuing my passion of helping others. One day, I will be a therapist. As for big changes – we will be welcoming a bouncing baby boy come February 2022! Our nine-year-old is very excited to be a big brother.
