Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Michael.
Hi Emily, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My love for the beauty industry started in high school. I was in a fashion design class and at the end of the year, we put on a fashion show to display our work. I did the hair and make up on my friends who modeled and that was when it opened the door for me. From there I attended Paul Mitchell the school specializing in hair coloring. While in school I worked at Sephora gaining knowledge in products and application that have helped me to this day. Shortly after graduating cosmetology school, I worked at the front desk at Paul Mitchell learning the ins and outs of a salon and customer service. They are such an amazing company to be a part of because they really focus on kindness.
I then transitioned into a management position for the cosmetic market focusing more on make up. I started working on location for weddings and photo shoots while being there and still am to this day!
Once I started working in a salon downtown Franklin wanting to step away from the retail scene I really fell in love with hair color. Working behind the chair I learned a lot from others in the salon and others learned from me it was a great balance. I’ve attended many product knowledge classes and brand specific color trainings that have been so influential.
After 8 years of being in the industry, I decided to take the leap and open my own salon! I chose to partner with a Sola Salon location and it has been one of the biggest joys in my career. I am my own boss and I am so good to me! I’ve now had my own space for three years and my career still keeps growing. I love the one on one time I get to have with each guest while making their hair look amazing. It also has been great to be in charge of my own schedule for as much I travel for weddings which are still a huge passion of mine.
Being in the Nashville area the wedding scene has exploded in the last few years. It’s so heartwarming to be a part of someone’s special day and do their hair and make up and sometimes a part time therapist to calm the nerves!
I love being part of the Nashville hair scene and everything I’ve been so blessed with over the years. I’m a people person through and through and I’m glad I get to share joy in my daily work with others.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I honestly can’t complain in my career path it has been such an amazing transition over the years. God has opened every door for me as I’ve needed it. I started cosmetology school the month after graduating high school. I attended Paul Mitchell graduating with color honors. I worked at Sephora while in school. Shortly after graduating, I worked at the front desk of Paul Mitchell the School learning the” front of house “ if you will. From there I managed at The cosmetic market learning more product knowledge and make over things. In time I started in a salon doing more behind the chair color work and not just make up! Retail hours are never the most ideal sometimes and I spent my fair share of working holidays prior to being my own boss. My biggest struggle along the way was nothing more than my own fear of the next big step and trusting that it was the right thing to do!
As you know, we’re big fans of Tease Hair & Co. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am a salon owner and stylist. I have owned my salon Tease Hair & Co for three years. I specialize in hair color and wedding hair and make up in the Nashville area. I am thankful for Sola Salons where my space is located. They have been an amazing company to work with.
What sets me apart is my kindness to other people. Life gets hard and it’s even worse when you have a bad hair day. I love for my salon space to be a safe haven and relaxing time for others to be in. I’m a firm believer in the importance of your mental health. Whether it be a shoulder to cry on or the “Pinterest worthy “ hair transformation to boost another’s confidence, I am here for it all.
I’m known for my color work and hair transformations. I love a good challenge and having the background knowledge with my years of training and classes to create something beautiful. The days of bringing in a magazine for hair inspiration are less and less. So many social media platforms influence all things beauty these days and I honestly love being able to recreate what someone else has wanted on their own hair they found scrolling through Instagram per se.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most is Being kind to others. At the end of the workday for me, I may have done three hair color clients and four hair cuts and they all loved how they looked when they walk out. That brings me joy. I love being able to help others feel better about themselves because it can be a tough, judgemental world we live in.
But also who cares how good someone’s new color is. Or how perfectly blended their layers are when someone at the grocery store on their way home made fun of the off-brand bag they were carrying or the older model car they drove that makes a funny noise. I think life should be about how you treat other people and being a kind human being. You never know what someone is going through and a simple smile from a stranger can be the best thing about their day. That’s what I strive for as a person and a business owner to be kind.
