Today we’d like to introduce you to Lord Goldie.
Hi Lord, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Well, first & foremost I was born & raised right here in Ville. At Baptist Hospital not St. Thomas (lol). Back & forth from out South to Harding Place. I started writing when I was 9 and I joined my first hip hop group in high school (Ice Water Records/TFP). I attended SAE in 05 to learn about audio engineering.
I got into some trouble a couple of years after I graduated & when I came home in 2011, I worked on a lot of music until I came out with my first single in 2013. The single was called “Can’t Turn It Off” feat Barz Major & Young Rell. It was produced by Syk Sense. Then in 2014, I released an 18-track project called “Built 2 Last” and never looked back. I played many shows out of state including SXSW, A3C, Sweet Heat Miami & more.
Then I made it my mission to not only gain the attention of my backyard but also create doors that led to different platforms to put more attention on the non-country artists in the city. In 2018, I met my backing band MUJA, which led to me getting on shows a hip-hop artist wouldn’t normally get on in the city. That year, I also started co-writing with a lot of artists outside of my genre. So 2018 was very transformative for me.
Fast forward to today, we’ve released our first single of the year “Sunday Funday”. It’s a collaboration featuring myself, Foundation Mecca, & an R&B duo I manage by the name of VīB (vibe). It’s produced by a super talented producer who goes by the name Nikus. Our first, but not last, country hip-hop track!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wish the road was smooth, but what would we learn along the way? The main struggle has been & still is, the gatekeepers of our city not wanting hip hop to flourish. We’re not welcome in a lot of downtown venues.
People are so-called afraid to book us, etc., BUT, from doing a lot of networking & building relationships, we have changed some minds. We still got a lot of work to do. Another one of our main struggles is not having a radio station that has our back no matter what. We need the main stations to really get dialed in on the local scene.
Shout out to the ones who have come & created lanes tho! We just need the big dawgs to chime in on all aspects. And then there’s the everyday struggle an artist goes through. Rather it’s writer’s block or building a team you can trust in. We push through tho!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a hip-hop artist, songwriter, manager, engineer, producer & overall plug in my city. Mimi, from Nashville, is not just country music, calls me the mayor & I wear that title proudly! I’m mainly known for my music.
It’s a genre I created called Trap Conscious. It’s street talk on a higher conscious level. I’m also known for being everywhere! People always see me or watch my social media and will always ask how do I have the time to be at all these places & how do I be knowing where to go.
I just try my best to keep up with everything through word of mouth or social media lol. My grind sets me apart from others. My stage presence sets me apart from others. I think my overall outlook on life sets me apart from others lol. I’m a rare breed baby!
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
All people have to do is reach out to work with me. Doesn’t matter if it’s by text, email, PM, or DM. Just holla at me! Especially, if you see me out. If it’s meant for us to work, we will. People can support me by following me on socials, reposting our music, coming out to shows, buying merch, etc.
