Conversations with Kaylee Federmann

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaylee Federmann.

Hi Kaylee, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started music in 3rd grade with choirs and eventually doing some theater in high school. In 9th grade, I started doing open mics around town which lead me to doing bar and restaurant gigs. I began reaching out to promoters and venues about opening up for acts that tour through and got the chance to open for artists like Ally Brooke of Fifth Harmony, Crystal Bowersox of American Idol, Todd Carey, etc… I’m originally from Boston and began traveling to Nashville and LA starting at 16 to do sessions and shows.  I worked with people like Blue McAuley (Demi Lovato, Boys like girls, HBO),  Peter Thomas, Steven Martinez (Sara Keys), etc… During the pandemic, I began posting videos on TikTok, almost a year later I had a little spark with a song I never actually planned on releasing. The song resonated with over 600k people on the platform and after releasing it, the song generated over 1 million streams. I was later that year nominated for 2 Boston Music Awards for pop act of the year and new artist of the year as well as a New England Music Award for pop act of the year. I now work with my manager and band doing shows in Boston / Nashville. I’ll be moving to Nashville in fall 22′!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I feel the biggest struggles along the way have been social media and having a healthy mindset with that. As well as being patient with people in terms of waiting for responses. It can be tricky when you feel like you’re being ignored, the best thing I tell myself to do is follow up. But, there’s a fine line between being persistent and annoying – I mayyyy have crossed it a time or two! Everything is just a lesson learned.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in singing, writing, and performing. I would say I more known for my melodies in the writer room or production ideas. I’m most proud of learning how to produce and be able to communicate with the producer in the room (if not be the producer in the room). What sets me apart from other artists would be my take on different perspectives in songwriting and accurately conveying the story while bringing out and highlighting the production.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
My biggest supporters would be my manager Stu who has been with me since I was 17. He has taken me under his wing and has taught me so many things about the industry. He has helped connect me with writers and artists and is an amazing friend when I’m down about my music or where I’m at in my career. He has never stopped believing in me from the beginning and has helped me achieve so many opportunities. I’m so lucky and grateful to be working with him.

My bands mates have been super supportive of me, they put up with my consent changing of songs to learn or focus on in rehearsal and always have my back on stage. They are also my best friends.

My mom and brother who have been my biggest number ones since the beginning. They are the first ones at every show and the last ones to leave. They give the hype and the feedback when needed, and know their role as cameraman at all the events. My brother has even done graphics for me from time to time and tips me on how to make and keep my brand – “on brand”. My mom has given me the independence to do my own thing while still having all the support to back me up when needed. My dad passed when I was 12 from cancer, my mom and brother are my heroes.

My boyfriend, who also happens to be my biggest and closest collaborator, as well as my guitar player. I owe him all credit for my production skills. He has taught me anything and everything about production, harmony, guitar and so much more. We make so much music together and I honestly don’t know where I’d be without him, both musically and personally. He has made me a better musician, artist, songwriter, producer, and person.
