Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Edwards.
Hi Anna, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
A lover of candles, Kathryn started to do some research and learned that your typical store-bought candles have a lot of toxic chemicals in them. And that’s what started the journey!
For Christmas, her husband bought her some candle-making supplies to kick start a side hobby, and she fell in love. She and I (Anna) had been friends for a number of years, so when she came to me with the idea of starting a candle-making business together it just seemed like a natural and fun thing to do!
We started out getting together on the weekends and experimenting with different candle scents while our husbands hung out and gave their opinions on candle names and which ones smelled best. And once we got the ball rolling and honed our process, we decided it was time to launch the business.
Kathryn’s husband Isaac built our website, and my husband Caleb helped with the creative and musical side of candle names and vision, and the rest as they say – is history.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We’ve been very fortunate to have the support of our friends and family, who have cheered us on since day 1. They’ve bought our candles, shared our story with others, and been excited every time we’ve released a new candle scent.
As with any small business, we’ve experienced the ups and downs of sales and “busy seasons”, but overall we think we’re very blessed!
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Lueur Candle Co.?
At Lueur Candle Co, we hand pour 100% soy wax candles using paraben and phthalate-free fragrances.
In addition, all of our fragrances exclude materials on California’s Prop 65 list, meaning they are about as safe as we can get them! We chose to use soy wax because it tends to burn both cleaner and longer than paraffin wax, meaning customers get a better bang for their buck.
But beyond our materials, what we believe sets Lueur apart from most other candle companies is our partnership with local music artists. Whenever we release another candle scent(s), we connect with a musical artist and let them name one or two candles after their songs. As a result, a portion of every candle sold goes straight to the artist!
In addition to our online sales, artists are also able to bring candles on tour, so you just might see a Lueur candle at their show. These candles come with a unique QR code on the back of the candle which leads the customer to the artist’s Spotify page and their amazing music!
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
We launched our company mid-pandemic. I think any type of company launch during that time is a risk in itself.
It started out as a hobby that grew into a passion. We saw the need that our community of musician friends had while having to adjust their livelihood and occupations. We adapted our company to shed light on that community by partnering with artists and featuring candles specifically for them and benefiting them in a small monetary way.
We are not incredibly musical ourselves, helping our friends make the world a better place with their musical creations and inspirations lasts longer than any candle burn ever could. That would probably be our biggest risk. Leaping out in faith hoping that our followers and our company scale can help our creative friends.
