Today we’d like to introduce you to Brett Sheroky.
Hi Brett, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I always wanted to be a songwriter but thought it was an impossible dream. So I instead chose a practical route and went to college back home in Illinois. It was in college when I met my wife. She convinced me to chase my dream.
We got married and moved to Nashville the next day. That was in 2009. I spent the next 11 years working my tail off to write better and better songs and trying to get a deal. I worked full-time jobs and multiple part-time jobs in order to provide for my family while chasing my dream. Finally, in 2020, I signed my first publishing deal with SeaGayle Music.
In that first year after singing my deal, I landed songs on Granger Smith and Blake Shelton Records. Since then, I’ve started building my own artist career which has been gaining momentum and is my primary focus today.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It’s been a long rough road. Four months after moving to Nashville, I was diagnosed with cancer. I went through surgery and chemo and I’m blessed to beat it. That experience threw me off the path of chasing my dream for a while. But when my oldest kid was born a switch in me flipped. I didn’t want her to live a ‘safe/practical’ life.
I wanted her to know that if you have a dream, you go get it. I started really working hard at my dream then. I worked jobs I hated for years in order to survive and sustain the chase of the dream. My wife and I have 3 kids and no family in Nashville so it’s always been hard juggling all of that. But we agreed to go all-in on this dream. We have had to sacrifice a lot.
We have given up on many trips, vacations, nights out and I have had to sell possessions in order to save money to invest in this dream. I’ve lost a lot of friendships and time with my family. I’ve been told ‘no’ by so many people in this business I probably couldn’t even recall 75% of them.
I’ve lost faith in what I’m doing numerous times and had to find it again.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a professional singer/songwriter. I write songs for SeaGayle Music. I’ve had songs recorded by artists like Granger Smith and Blake Shelton.
Within the Nashville music industry, I think/hope I’m known for my style of songwriting. I hardly ever shoot down the middle when writing songs. I like being a little off-center conceptually, musically, and lyrically. I also really truly care about the craft of songwriting. I want to serve every song to the best of my ability, no matter how long it takes.
Now that some of my dreams have started to come true (signing a deal, writing songs that landed on major records, etc.) the thing that I’m still most proud of is that I never gave up. 11 years is a long time to work towards something and pray the same prayer. I’m really proud of myself and my wife for seeing it through.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
It’s beginning to look a little bit like the wild west in country music.
The genre has been changing with influences of other genres but there’s also a big push being made back towards more traditional country music. Radio used to be king, but it is becoming less popular and streaming services are becoming king. A lot of people say radio will be dead in the next 10 years. A songwriter’s main way to make money is to get a song on the radio. Streaming services hardly pay songwriters anything.
If radio dies, songwriters will have nowhere to make money. I know some songwriters are asking for part ownership of the master recordings when an artist releases one of their songs. Since that is where the record labels make a lot of money (because they usually own the master recordings) I would imagine there will be push back on that.
