Today we’d like to introduce you to AMXXR.
Hi AMXXR, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story is not linear; there are a lot of layers to it. AMXXR— is pronounced like my given name, Ameer. The product of a Jamaican/American family joined the US Army early.
At 16, I enlisted. I did two years of that and then 11 months of combat, in the Special Ops Command as a PSYOPS member. After my tenure in the army, I used the GI bill to enroll at nearby Fordham University, where I earned a Bachelor’s in Computer Science and a Master’s in Cyber Security. All the while, also moonlighted as a barber.
It led to meeting C.L., Smooth, who eventually brought me to Pete. Over the years, a relationship was forged leading to several records with Pete Rock and years later landing a deal on his new imprint “Tru Soul Records” as the first artist he ever signed.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a windy road for me but throughout each turn was an opportunity to grow and learn as a person and artist. Balancing work, life, love, family, school, and creativity can be overbearing if not properly managed.
Time always seems to be against you but moreover, distractions are the enemy of creativity. So the struggle has beauty in it but if mismanaged can be detrimental.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Artist and Technologist. My concentrations are in musical art (hip-hop), technology, and building more knowledge in the realm of clothing/merchandising for Peace Beloved Clothing.
I am the proudest of my willingness to stick with my problems longer than I glorify my victories. I say this because it has served as a tool/mindset for continuous progression all around. The separation between me and my constituents in the world of music are the things I have done outside of it in regards to technology, degrees, military, barbering, and all-around hustle.
The separation is in the results not the mouth in my opinion.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I think mentors should choose you in my opinion as it creates a more organic interaction between mentor and mentee.
The exchange should be fulfilling on both sides of the relationship as opposed to someone wanting help more than they want guidance to put in the leg work. What has worked for me is cultivating the relationships naturally that eventually turn into a mentor-type vibe and friendship that lasts a lifetime, not a semester.
