Meet Priscilla Davis of Tennessee CDL School

Today we’d like to introduce you to Priscilla Davis. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Our journey started more than 10 years ago. After the 2008 financial crisis, Shawn Davis decided to get into the trucking industry as it seemed like one of the only industries that were not as affected as others were. After a few years of driving trucks, Shawn transitioned from driver to instructor.

He spent many years teaching thousands of drivers how to get a CDL. Because of his love and passion for teaching, he was promoted through various positions up to Director and Vice president. Having spent 7 years educating students and running various schools, Shawn decided to venture off and start working on building his own.

While working towards this dream with his wife, Shawn worked for a trucking company running multiple departments. The experience and knowledge he attained running recruiting, safety, and maintenance departments played a vital role in his ability to continue working towards their goals.

With all the experience and contacts in the industry from over a decade of work, Shawn and Priscilla were able to open their school in 2021.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In life nothing is easy, is one of our favorite quotes to talk about to our students, and the same has gone for us. Moving to a whole new city that neither of us knew anything about was challenging on its own.

Due to the process of being an approved school through the Tennessee Higher Education Commission, we had to endure renting a location but were not able to open and start the school for 4 months, which is the length it takes to approve a school through the state. Getting a loan? Yea, that was even more difficult. Because, once again, we weren’t an approved school yet… so we just had to wait.

Once we received that approval. Oh man., we hit the ground running. Our most recent endeavor is trying to help the State of Tennessee allow more administrators to be able to test anyone who wants a CDL. The administrators that are approved at the moment are so booked and backed up with the amount of testing required that it is not helping the shortage of truck drivers.

We’ve been impressed with Tennessee CDL School, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Our school specializes in teaching students how to obtain their Class A CDL.

We are different because we keep small classes, giving student drivers the ability to drive and maximize their time on the trucks as well as have multiple one-on-one time with the instructors. As a team, we are proud to say 98% of our students pass and graduate.

The instructors at our school really help and care for all the students. The real brand us more than anything we can do.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Since we opened our school in the midst of this crisis, the biggest lesson we have learned is to run with the punches. Keep going and change what needs to be changed to keep it rolling.
