Life & Work with Janeka Jordan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janeka Jordan.

Hi Janeka, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, thank you so much for having me, it’s a pleasure. My name is Janeka and I was born and raised in Detroit, Mi. Music has always been a part of my life, I was introduced to many different genres and I gained an appreciation for them all but nothing stood out to me the way hip hop music did. Every Christmas my Aunt Kim would get a karaoke machine and I would sing and just imagine me singing and performing in front of an audience. It’s funny because I grew up in a household where we couldn’t listen to rap music, my aunt had a large collection of CDs and I used to go in the basement and listen to all the hip-hop music. When I learned how to write id always write poems and short stories, and as I got older, I would start writing music but I always shy and scared to show the world my talent. The only people who really knew were my close friends and family. I went thru a bad breakup that inspired to write “Know That” I told myself that day I’m going to stop being so shy and scared and just do it!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
No, my life has definitely been a roller coaster ride and I’m not ashamed to say that. When Covid first hit I lost my job and I ended up moving to Las Vegas just to move back months later to Arizona… I stayed there for abut 6 months, I had a family member ask me to move to Michigan so I could help her with her kids, she ended up flipping the switch on me and kicked me out. At that point I was stuck in a dilemma, do I move back to Arizona, or do I stay in Michigan. In that moment I felt so bad, I was hurt because I came to help a family member out just to be kicked out in the streets. I told myself from that point never again. My friend at the time was moving to Nashville and told me I should move too and at first, I was very hesitant but I ended up applying for an apartment got approved and I’ve been here ever since.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an artist. I create hip-hop music… My song “Know That” my goal is to inspire with my music. I want others to know no matter what you are going through, been through you always stand tall and not give in. I’m on a mission. When you hear my music, you are going to feel like you can conquer anything and that’s the vibe I want to give off. What sets me apart is that I root for the underdog, the one who was overlooked, unappreciated, the ones people stepped over. Whenever I do something it’s not just for me it’s to help others who may feel like they can’t.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
To be true to yourself. Don’t let others place you in a box or make you feel like you aren’t good enough because you are. My whole life I’ve been the underdog but I always knew my time was coming and I was going to shock the world. I always want to be a relatable person; I want people to see me and know if she did it, I know I can.
