Rising Stars: Meet Bedon Lancaster

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bedon Lancaster.

Hi Bedon, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Bedon Lancaster. I started playing music at a young age. Growing up in both New Orleans and Memphis, I was very much surrounded by incredible musicians and artists who left a great impact on me. I grew up around brass instruments and soul music, both of which have definitely snuck into my music personally. I started my solo project “Bedon” during my sophomore year of college in Oxford, MS. During that time, I recorded an album with my dear friend, collaborator, and producer Adam Lochemes. I would drive to Nashville to record any chance I got a break from school. In 2020, I released my debut LP “Morning”, obviously, the pandemic started, and I moved to Nashville to pursue music further. Since then, I have been hard at work on a second LP. I recently announced the first single “Woah” which is set to release on April 12th and my first Nashville headlining show on April 21st at Mercy Lounge with Ethansroom and Drumming Bird, two of my dear friends. I am very, very excited for everything that is to come. This new album is the best thing I have ever made, and every single person who contributed to it gave their absolute best. I am extremely grateful to be surrounded by so many fantastic artists and incredible people in Nashville.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Obviously, moving to Nashville during a pandemic was a serious challenge. The past two years were a great period of growth for me in my personal life and my life as an artist. I for sure had the biggest period of existential crisis I’ve ever experienced during that time, wanting to be making music, wanting to be touring, and just wanting to work hard at what I love to do so very much. It took a long time for us to finally get in the studio (us being me, Isaiah Beard, and Adam Lochemes). My dear friend Ryan Savage also contributed to this project on several levels. It took finally getting into the studio after a full year of writing and conceptual work to break this season of self-doubt and existentialism (not saying I don’t struggle with these things at all anymore, just not as much these days). Recording this new album has been the most creatively energizing and affirming experience I have ever had, and being done with it has been very strange after so much energy was focused on one thing for so long.

SORRY FOR RAMBLING I LIKE TO TALK A LOT!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an artist based in Nashville, TN. I go by my first name, Bedon. It’s pronounced bee-din if you were curious or confused. I am proud of everything I am doing! I am proud of my music, the people I perform with (Matt Simpson, Ryan Savage, Adam Lochemes, Jack Filipovic, Quayshun Shumpert, Brandon Mitchell, Austin Brooks), and I am proud of all of my friends who are artists in the community here in Nashville. I love to make music and share it with people, and I am especially proud of my coming project (I haven’t announced it yet). I want to make things that inspire me, and I want to foster a strong community of fun at my shows! Come to Mercy Lounge April 21st!

What are your plans for the future?
I am releasing new music this year. “Woah” releases April 12th through Better Company Records. In the greater context of the record, it is the introduction of conflict into the narrative of the album which cascades into this journey that the album takes you on. I have not announced this album publicly yet.
