Today we’d like to introduce you to Leon Timbo.
Hi Leon, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Leon Timbo and I am singer/ songwriter from Jacksonville, FL. My personal experience with singing was a very spiritual one. Music saved my sanity and gave me an outlet to see the world. I didn’t come from a musical family and having a spiritual awakening that made me discover my voice was a very outer natural experience for me. Music hugged me with purpose when I had no idea it was an option; It gave me a path to discover my identity.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My road to music had both smooth and rough patches. My biggest struggle was finding my home when it came to my music. The thing that I discovered is that I belong everywhere and nowhere at the same time. Coming to the realization and awakening that I belong everywhere and nowhere has given me a lot of stability and flexibility in my career.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an artist and a songwriter. I specialize in articulating the beauty of love, its pain, and its process. I specialize in it not because I have completed my discovery of it but instead talking about and exploring the deep depths of love is my passion. I see everything through the lens of love; I see love, pain, and beauty in everything. Writing music is something I do, and at times I don’t always feel that I am great at it.
However, being great at something is not a prerequisite for pursuing or running after it. So, I persevere and pursue. Part of my songwriting and honest conversation about love centers around my mismanagement of love. I’ve learned that boundaries are essential, and I haven’t always done well at setting and maintaining boundaries.
I am most proud of the authentic relationships in my life. I am most proud of the people who call me friend. Although the subject of friendship also holds the most significant pain in my life, friendship is still an incredible gift and welcomed comfort.
The beauty of an authentic relationship, in my opinion, is worth the uncertainty and risk that come along with sharing your heart with another.
What sets me apart is the thing that sets us all apart. It is the fact that my journey is derivative of my life experience, my mental health, and my spiritual sensitivities. I am a product of a specific religious upbringing. I am also a student of legends in R&B and Americana, and these things have culminated and established who I am. The thing that sets any one of us apart is the unique combinations of our individual experiences.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Being a dad and making music makes me happy. I am a girl dad to three of the most amazingly talented and gifted girls. My daughters are my pride and joy, and their musical talents have been featured on my albums.
My latest single, entitled “Galaxy,” explores the depth of my love for my daughters and the joy I experience being their father. The song talks about what I want our love to be, how I wish it to be remembered, and how I wish my daughters to experience it. This song, coupled with being a dad, makes me happy!
