Meet Garrett Moshier

Today we’d like to introduce you to Garrett Moshier.

Hi Garrett, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
Hey there! I’m Garrett Moshier. I’m a songwriter, producer, sideman, and artist. I’ve been in Nashville for about 8 years now, and I’ve been a full-time touring musician for a little over three years now. Most of my early musical background came from the church, mostly in and around Bradenton, Florida. I came to Nashville to study music at Belmont University, receiving a degree in Commercial Music in 2018. I began releasing music and performing around town as an artist in the local scene at venue like Mercy Lounge, Exit/In, and The Basement. When the pandemic hit, a lot of those venues were either shut down or forced to temporarily halt shows featuring local artists.

Following that, throughout 2020 I started performing as a sideman with other artists a lot more as a guitarist, keyboardist, and music director. With some of those artists, I’ve been lucky enough to play lots of venues I always dreamed of – this past year alone I’ve been lucky enough to play at Bridgestone Arena, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, The Ryman Auditorium, and more. In addition to playing live, I’ve gotten to work on and produce music for major label artists and even contributed to a Grammy-nominated song in 2021!

Now in 2022, I’ve begun to release my own music again. Playing on the road with other artists is a blast, but my heart is with songwriting and telling stories that I’ve lived myself. My debut album will come out this May and is entirely self-written and produced. Many of the songs were born during the pandemic and I hope that they find a new home in the ears and hearts of the people that listen to them.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The road has definitely had bumps. Even aside from the pandemic, pulling off a full-time career as a musician has never been an easy task. It usually involves wearing lots of hats and doing lots of odd gigs to pay the bills. Lately for me, it mainly means being on the road and sleeping on a bus for half the days out of a year while attempting to plan a wedding!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I always aim to think and create like an artist, whether I’m in the production chair or backing up another artist on stage. A byproduct of being an independent artist is learning to wear lots of hats. Not including the work for my own music, I’m currently wearing the hat of band member, producer, engineer, music director, keyboardist, guitarist, and vocalist across the spectrum for several different artists. It’s a lot to keep up with, but it certainly is fun!

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc.?
A few podcasts for my fellow musicians: Wong Notes with Cory Wong, Dave’s 5 Hot Takes with Dave Barnes, Lightning Bugs with Ben Folds, and Song Exploder with Hrishikesh Hirway.

Apps for musicians and songwriters: notes app for lyrics/ideas… and a good metronome app to practice with. I use “Tempo”. Every artist and musician in 2021 is benefited by being able to lock in with a click track and still have great groove!
