Check Out Sammy Kay’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sammy Kay.

Hi Sammy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I picked up the guitar around age 11. Taylor Swift was my greatest inspiration, and she gave me the confidence as a female artist to pursue music at a young age. I’m originally from Indiana, and I attended the Community School of the Arts in Marion, IN for 10 years outside of regular school. I took theatre, dance, art, and music classes, and I think that studying all of those forms of art have shaped me into the music artist I am today. I spent my middle and high school years traveling around Indiana, performing mostly at county fairs, coffee shops, and farmers’ markets. I also traveled consistently to Nashville to play at the Bluebird Cafe open mic. I always knew that I wanted to pursue music in Nashville. The only college that I applied for was Belmont University. I graduated from their songwriting program last year. I now work in the music business as a music publishing administrator while pursuing my career in music.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of my greatest struggles until recently has been finding the right collaborators. I feel like after college graduation, everything really fell into place. I finally have found producers, co-writers, bookers, and bandmates that genuinely support me and elevate my artistry.

Another struggle has been trying to consistently invest in my art as an independent artist. It’s been a challenge to release high-quality music and market it, but I have found ways to create and promote on a budget.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an independent folk-pop artist. My greatest music inspirations are Ingrid Michaelson, Taylor Swift, and Vance Joy. I perform regularly around Nashville. Some places include: the Listening Room, the Big Machine Tavern, and with Nashville Tour Stop. Something that I’m most proud of is my most recent EP release titled “12th Avenue”. I wrote all of the songs during my time as a songwriting major at Belmont. I recorded three of the songs at Round Table Recording Company in Indianapolis, Indiana, and I co-produced one of them here in Nashville. I’m most proud of this release because these songs are a compilation of my college years and they are exactly how I want to be portrayed as an artist. The title track is based on a first date on 12th Ave South in Nashville. I hear it also as a love letter to one of my favorite places. Something that sets me apart from others are the topics/ideas that I write about. I want my listeners to be engaged and really connect with my messages.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
One quality that I feel is most important to my success is my drive. I am constantly trying to be a better version of myself and my artistry. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the drive to get me here.
