Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Buder.
Hi Samantha, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In college, I started to really love beauty and makeup and decided to take a certification course to become a professional makeup artist. I loved getting creative and designing looks, but what I really fell for was the business side of things. I would spend hours on my website and logo, planning out my social media page, and organizing my calendar. I think I enjoyed managing and marketing myself way more than actually being on the job. Once the pandemic hit, I took a breather from makeup due to safety concerns, and I realized my heart wasn’t in it the way it used to be. I created a TikTok account and became mesmerized by Perfume TikTok. The way these fragrances were being described on that platform made so much more sense to me, compared to the magazine and TV ads I had seen growing up. I started my collection of niche fragrances from there, and became obsessed with being the girl who always smelled good, my business brain quickly jumped into action as I began to brainstorm ways, I could immerse myself into the fragrance world, without overworking my passion the way I had with makeup. I came up with a few good ideas, but my first step was to understand more about perfume, rather than just have an appreciation for it. That led me to create my own TikTok account, a page built on matching scents to aesthetics and experiences. Through creating this content, I’ve built up my collection, as well as my knowledge of fragrance and perfuming. I’m excited to continue connecting with the community I’ve built and learn more about scent and fragrance.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Working from home and being your own boss is pretty low stress, but there have been some obstacles to overcome along the way. I actually started the Nectar Nashville TikTok page, under a different name, with a friend. Due to creative differences and organizational conflicts, we decided to go our separate ways. We grew the page together, so splitting up raised many challenges, especially considering a portion of our following had found our page from the content my friend had created. Being the sole contributor to the page took some shifting on my end and some patience with the finicky TikTok algorithm, but I have found the growth of the page to be more consistent now than it ever was.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I create TikToks about perfume, where I give scent recommendations based on aesthetics and experiences. I usually select 3-4 perfumes and create a video showcasing them next to an edit of aesthetic videos and photos. This is how my brain works through selecting a perfume for the day, so it’s really fun for me to come up with concepts and bring them to life. Some of my favorite videos I’ve created are “Perfumes for Moody November Days” and “How to Smell Like Twilight” as well as a series called “Perfumes for Your Favorite Lana Del Rey Song” where I pair the perfume recommendations to the vibe of the song my followers request. It’s very satisfying to me to not only put visuals and audios together but to bring in a third sensory aspect to really put you in the room with that song or experience. We all know the feeling of cozying up with a blanket on a Sunday morning with the light coming through the blinds, but attaching that to a scent memory makes it more tangible and relivable, and that’s what I think sets me apart from other creators.
Any big plans?
I’m hoping sometime within the next year or so, I can enroll in an online course to learn more about creating perfume. I would like to have my own small line of perfumes, and maybe a storefront in Nashville one day. For now, I’m really enjoying the social media side of things and would like to continue growing my platforms and connecting with other fragrance lovers.
