Check Out CJ O’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to CJ O. Them and their team share their story with us below:

CJ-0 is a music producer, composer, and versatile artist from Los Angeles, CA. She grew up in a musical home, and fell in love with music and recording at the age of 4, using a double-deck karaoke machine, overdubbing on cassette tapes with a small keyboard.

At age 9, she sold her first composition to an artist in Nashville, and since then, toured with multiple artists, composed for orchestras, and received 5 GRAMMY nominations by the age of 20. Her credits include Netflix, SPLICE, Laura Bell Bundy, Jon McLaughlin, The Weeks, The Sarasota Orchestra, the Nashville Symphony, and more.

Also, she had an opportunity to intern and head engineering/production at some of the most frequented studios in Nashville, and now currently is signed to Soundstripe Music, head of production for AG Record Co, and producing/composing for film and tv music and scores.

She is also toplining on upcoming records, and working on a record herself coming out later this year.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been a lot of hard work, and a lot of up and down. I’ve lived many lives, and worn different hats along the way, and it’s come with its challenges. I think the hardest obstacle to overcome was not feeling seen in whatever current place I was in concerning my career, based off what people knew of me in the past.

I feel like for women, especially in this industry, you have to play a role, or have a brand, or be known for one thing. It becomes your identity. It’s just sometimes hard for people to fully wrap their heads around you having many sides to who you are and what you can do.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
So, my main role currently has been producing/composing at the current moment, and I specialize in music for film/tv/gaming. But I also have my own presence as a solo artist. New music coming soon.

I think the thing that makes my situation unique is that I get to experience full creative freedom. I work across all genres and I’ve been able to be a part of so many records, from Americana to RnB to Hans Zimmer style composition. I love the growth I get from working in a diverse space and it’s helped my knowledge of music in general. It’s something I fell into and feel really blessed to be experiencing.

What’s next?
I’ve spent the last 3 years doing groundwork for where I am now, and a lot of it is starting to roll out/come into fruition. I think the biggest plan is finally getting the opportunity to show everyone all the projects I’ve had the chance the work on, or that have been on the down-low or still in production.

Also, I’m super excited to jump back into the artist seat, and collaborate on some upcoming albums, as well as finally get some music out on my own.
