Today we’d like to introduce you to Dorian Porter.
Hi Dorian, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey and passion began with baking at a very young age – I would say 7 years old. I spent a lot of time with my grandmother, who loved being in the kitchen and preparing food for her family. I was a child who loved to help wherever I could. I would wash and de-stem collard greens, wash dishes, and whatever else I was allowed to do in between. The one aspect I fell absolutely in love with was baking cakes. I loved the process from beginning to end, especially the end result when done correctly. When my grandmother took ill, my aunt took up the helm of preparing family meals whenever she was available. She knew how much I loved to bake cakes and continued to teach me and help me become better. The time spent with those 2 women was what drove me to attend culinary school and truly learn what it means to work in the food industry as a professional. After being able to recreate some family recipes with accuracy, I decided to create some things on my own incorporating those same values along the way. As a result, I received a great deal of positive feedback and was encouraged to fully launch my business. That’s how Triple D’s was born.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I believe starting a business in any industry is never a totally smooth road, so to speak. I’ve done my best not to think of them as struggles, but only lessons of improvement. One of the struggles I have overcome is the task of preparation. I learned to give myself time as an artist and business owner to grow and hone my skills and processes. I began to produce baked goods in my hometown of Memphis, TN in 2009. There were numerous occasions when goods burned, melted, or the decorations just did not live up to the vision that I had. In order to become more efficient, I took several avenues to learn, which included purchasing and reading books, asking those who understood my craft and just outright practicing. I had to fully grasp the fact that nothing happens overnight and the vision will become a reality if the sweat equity is applied.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Triple D’s Bakery is an online bakery that specializes in a variety of home-baked goods. We have been active since our initial launch in 2009, however, July 2020 provided us the opportunity to showcase what we had to offer. Our cornerstone items have always been cakes. The flavors we offer are chocolate, red velvet, white chocolate, German chocolate, caramel, pound cake, and lemon Bundt cakes. In 2015, we began to experiment with cookies, which turned out to be a huge success. There are more than 15 items on our menu, however, our standout goodie for the past 2 years has been our chocolate chip cookie, with the Snickerdoodle cookie coming in as a strong second. One of our favorite pieces of feedback was from a 65- year old veteran stating that it was the best chocolate chip cookie he had ever tasted. We still agree that is the most flattering compliment we have received.
Furthermore, we have worked alongside organizations, schools, businesses, and realtors to provide their staff and guests with delicious, made-from-scratch treats. We believe in providing a tailored experience for our customers, which includes but is not limited to, creative and custom packaging to highlight their occasion.
This season, we are proud to present our popular cookie boxes that will allow many to experience a variety of Triple D’s Bakery cookies and/or bars depending on their chosen package choice. Our boxes are great for larger gatherings like business meetings, celebrations, birthday parties, and the like.
