Meet Lauren Worden of Worden Aquatics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Worden.

Lauren, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up in the pool. I took swimming lessons every summer starting when I was 2. I loved the water. I was a good swimmer.

When I was 4, my dad took my brother and me to a water park in Kansas. We were hanging out in the wave pool waiting for the waves to come on. As soon as they did, the waves took me under. The lifeguards had to stop the waves and pull me out. I was fine but startled.

When I was 13, I was on a canoe trip in Colorado. Halfway down the river, my canoe flipped and the water pulled me down the river and I ended up stuck between 2 big rocks. I thought my life was over. But a gush of water came and I was able to come up.

When I was 15, I became a lifeguard. When I was 16, I got my WSI (water safety instructor) to allow me to teach lessons.

I started coaching the Special Olympics when I was 18.

Started Worden Aquatics 7 years ago.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I faced several challenges growing up; having a speech impediment and being told that since I had a learning disability, I would never amount to anything in my 9th-grade math teacher. My speech hasn’t always affected me. There are times when I talk so fast that no one can really understand me. And then there are periods where I have to think about what I’m going to say to someone before I speak. And when I try to verbalize it, I can’t get the words out. So, you can imagine that when I started Worden Aquatics, I always had it in the back of my mind, that my business wouldn’t succeed because I had a learning disability. I’m still overcoming it today.

And regarding my speech, I will still get flustered when I have to talk to adults, especially adults with that I’ve never spoken. Once I get to know them, I get much more comfortable around them.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
In 2006, after fourteen years of independently teaching private swimming lessons as a solo instructor, Lauren Worden started Worden Aquatics. Today, Worden Aquatics is a leading Nashville area swim school with multiple locations, multiple instructors, and a reputation for being a high-quality swim lesson and swim programs provider.

Lauren Worden, the founder of Worden Aquatics, experienced two near-death drowning incidents as a young child. It was these two near-death incidents that would lead her to dedicate her life to teaching others how to swim. Lauren’s mantra is, “Everyone needs to know how to swim.”

Worden Aquatics offers one-on-one private swimming lessons that promote lifelong fitness, technique, and safety. We teach year-round, seven days a week, and since we have both indoor and outdoor pools, students can enroll anytime. We work with individuals to develop proper techniques through focused learning and goal-oriented rewards. We do not use lesson plans, and all lesson instruction caters to the individual swimmer. Our number one priority is safety, and we focus on breathing, body position, technique, and developing proper swimming habits. All lessons are taught by our passionate, knowledgeable, and inspirational instructors who have all gone through a robust training process.

What’s next?
