Conversations with Hannah Trager

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Trager.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My mom jokes that I could sing before I could talk. I was always singing growing up – performing, making up voices, pretending I was already famous… There are really embarrassing videos somewhere on my family computer where I pretend I’m singing a song “requested by my fans” hahaha.

Hoping that never gets leaked. I started singing in my church and at my youth group when I was in high school, and that’s when I was like, ok, I need to figure out how to do this for real. I want to be an artist. I auditioned for the music school at Belmont University, got accepted, moved here, and I’ve been here ever since.

I’ve met and continue to meet the most amazing and creative people, and have been pursuing music since then. I started putting out music in 2019 and have been riding that wave since.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Pursuing a music career isn’t for the faint of heart, for sure. It’s a constant battle of trying not to compare your success to your peers, trying to sell yourself but still be authentic, etc.

BUT, it’s been the most fun. I love writing music and creating it, putting it out, creating live shows, dreaming up visuals… I think it’s all part of it. You can’t gain many rewards without giving up your comfort.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an artist and a songwriter. You can find my music anywhere! I’m a Spotify girl, but whatever suits you. I think what I’m most proud of is that all my songs are true and authentic.

It’s really hard for me when I’m writing a song for myself, to write something that hasn’t actually happened to me or that I haven’t personally experienced. So I really love that all my songs are true stories and experiences.

But I’m also proud of the fact that if I’m in a writing room for someone else, I can tap into those emotions for them and their song. It’s a fun game being a songwriter, you’ve gotta wear a lot of hats some days.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I love luck! But I also believe that you make your own. Something I’ve learned is that sometimes if you want something, you can just… ask? Or just do it yourself?

Go for it, you know what I mean? I’m a big “ask forgiveness, not permission” (within reason) kind of gal. It’s worked well for me nine times out of 10.

I think some of my favorite “career” moments have come from dumb luck and risk and bravery and belief that it’s just going to work out.
