Today we’d like to introduce you to Camille Rae.
Hi Camille, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I started singing and performing at 3 years old. Throughout my childhood, I was known as the “little girl who sings” in my small hometown. I spent my childhood singing at church revivals, festivals, talent shows beauty pageants, and really any event that allowed me to perform. I joined the choir in middle school and was active in choir events until I graduated.
I went on to get a degree in music education where I classically trained in opera. I got the choir director position at my hometown high school right out of college and taught there for 3 years building the choral and drama departments. After 3 years, I married my first husband and moved to British Columbia, CA where I pursued theatre for three years. I found that wasn’t the right fit for me and finally moved to Nashville at the age of 29 and my ex-husband moved to Florence, Italy to study for his degree.
I moved to Nashville with very little money in my bank account and not a clue as to what to do to start my career. For the first 6 months, I sang at every open mic and round I could find in town and really got acquainted with the songwriting community. It was a great start and allowed me to acquire gigs around town. During these 6 months, I filed for divorce and started working with a manager.
For the next 4 years, I worked with this person and while my career was going extremely well under their management, the personal relationship was quite toxic. During this time, I released 2 full albums, “I Need Me” in 2015 and “Come Find Me” in 2016. I had 3 successful radio singles, with my song “I Need Me” making 26 on the Music Row Country Breakout Charts as well as touring heavily nationally both as a solo artist and with my band.
As great as the professional side was going, I had to part ways with this manager due to my mental and emotional health and safety in 2017. This encouraged me to rebuild my career as a self-managed and independent artist. Since this rebuild, I released my Americana/Country project called “This Time”, which took a bit of a stylistic turn from previous releases.
It really dug into my emotions at the time while maintaining a positive and upbeat overall vibe. I continued to tour nationally and also did two international/national cruise residencies with my band. I also became part of a duo called “Calamity Jane” with violist/violinist Lucy Cantley, which has had great success in the short two years we have been together.
I am currently on a break from touring as I recently got married and now have a baby boy on the way in June 2022. My duo, however, did open for the amazing Diamond Rio at the iconic Renfro Valley Entertainment Center (which is also in my hometown) back in April 2022, which was definitely a bucket list item for me as an artist and a huge fan.
I plan to release a new single called “If I’d Known Better” on 5/27, which is an upbeat pop song. I’m excited to release such a fun and experimental song! It definitely aligns with all the exciting changes coming up for Camille Rae!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been the smoothest road. In the midst of my career accolades in my early career in Nashville, I was in a very toxic personal relationship with my management, which trickled over into my professional career.
I parted ways with this manager in 2017 and went on to rebuild my career self managing everything. The rebuild was tough, but I came out on the other side stronger.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a country recording artist as well as a singer-songwriter. I would say that I am known for the vulnerability in my music. I have always maintained the goal to inspire others as much as possible.
I would say that is the one thing that makes me the proudest; that people have connected to my music in a way that has helped them in some way.
