Life & Work with Austin Sawyer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin Sawyer. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Drumming Bird is an indie-rock band based in Nashville, TN. It is the main vehicle of singer-songwriter, Austin Sawyer. The 23-year-old has been writing and performing music for over 7 years as Drumming Bird, and finally hit his stride with the February 2019 full-length release Great Smoky Love.

This was followed by 2 singles later in the year: “Riff Song” and “Halloween Party.” Sawyer writes music that draws inspiration from a breadth of artists ranging from Bruce Springsteen to Galaxie 500 to The Avett Brothers. His refreshing take on Indie Rock provides music that evokes emotion, without sacrificing energy.

Drumming Bird released their second full-length record, Ocoee, on October, 9th 2020 to critical acclaim and regular radio rotation on several stations including Nashville’s Lightning 100, even being named Local Artist of the Week for the week of October 12th. Early 2021 also saw Drumming Bird land placement of their song “Second Best” on Showtime’s hit TV show Shameless.

2022 has started off with a string of SoFar Sounds shows in the Northeast, and Drumming Bird will be opening for Daniel Nunnelee on a run of 23 shows this summer.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’d say for the most part I have had a smooth road. Like most creatives, there are always the frustrations that come with sharing your art (i.e. feeling like it doesn’t get enough attention or respect).

However, I have a very supportive group of family, friends, and collaborators that keep me encouraged.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a singer/songwriter who releases music under the name Drumming Bird. My music is sort of in the indie-rock/folk-rock genres.

I believe I have a unique sound that blends many different influences ranging from indie rock groups to classic country, to heartland rock and pop-punk.

I have released 2 full-length records and have an EP on the way this fall. The lead single, “American Spirits” will be released on May 19th.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Books – I love autobiographies. Recently, I read Kevin Garnett’s book KG A to Z and now I’ve started on the George Jones autobiography.

Podcasts – Cocaine and Rhinestones. An amazing podcast about 20th-century country music.
