Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Torrez.
Hi Alex, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Texas: Born and raised in Floydada, TX (small west Texas town pop. 3500) I started playing drums at age 5. Tried some colleges but they didn’t work for me. So I played music with some local bands before I took the leap of faith and moved to Nashville in 1986 to try my luck.
Nashville: I retired from the road in 1995 as a touring drummer to Tracy Lawrence, Leon Russell, Edgar Winter, and many others to take a position as Director of A&R for Sony Records working in an artist development capacity with the careers of the Dixie Chicks, Patty Loveless, Joe Diffie, and others.
In 1997, I was promoted to Sr. Director of A&R position for DKC Records in the Sony ATV Tree building. Under the direction of Producer Don Cook, Alex worked with such artists as Brooks and Dunn, Tracy Lawrence, Alabama, The Mavericks & Wade Hayes.
At Sony Music, I secured over 40 major record label chart-topping singles recorded by artists like Martina McBride, the Dixie Chicks, Tim McGraw, and Keith Urban. I was also responsible for placing Ronnie Dunn’s “Single of the Year” Grammy-nominated song “Cost Of Living”
In 2004, I was contacted by Gibson Guitars to oversee the Entertainment Relations Division headquartered in Nashville, as a Marketing Executive to develop a variety of co-branding opportunities worldwide.
I recently ran companies for Tracy Lawrence at Lawrence Music Group and Dallas Davidson’s Play It Again Music where I headed up the record label division of both and oversaw all aspects of the labels that included Artist development, radio promotion, social media, marketing, publicity, distribution, fulfillment, and merch. Plus, all design and branding aspects of the company.
Now, I’m fully concentrating on my own record label and management company, Torrez Music Group distributed by The Orchard. I’m the founder and CEO of the label, management & publishing companies overseeing the careers of Triston Marez, and Gabe Lee and developing newcomers LoneHollow, Zoe Cummins, Braxton Keith & King Margo.
This year, I also launched a sister label in Texas called TMG Tejas. The label was created to sign, develop and guide the careers of great Mexican American Country Singers. Texas fan-favorite Mario Flores will be the debut artist of the new label.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly, I’m pretty level-headed and can balance things out really well.
With my 35 + years of experience, I can figure out most things myself. I guess if I had any challenges they would be that I’m self-funded. I could always use more funding but I manage to stay within my limits there.
I would also eventually love an office staff. I’m close to making that happen so I look forward to the day I can bounce ideas and daily work items off of team members.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I really lucky in a way that I get to oversee all aspects of my artist career, I love what I do and have the best time doing it all.
I have my hands in the record label aspect and all that comes with launching projects. But I’m also very involved in photo shoots, the design of all the content we work with, and producing all the music. A&R-ing all the projects. Managing our artist careers and tour schedules.
Work-wise: I’m most proud of the fact that all my artist has a lot of respect for me and they come to me for guidance and leadership.
Family-wise: I love being a dad. I have 2 kids. I’m super proud of both. They are both married and I love spending time with them and their families. I think I’m a great dad… haha… and I’m proud of that.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
I would say to be really smart about working in a room and building relationships. Be a nice person. Be humble. Be tough but also have empathy.
I still work with many colleagues in my business that I’ve known for 20-30 years. I still ask for help when I get stuck on something or I’m not educated in what I’m trying to learn. Don’t be afraid of asking questions. Don’t be a know it. That’s impossible.
My favorite word is “Chump.” Don’t be a chump!!
