Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Patton.
Liz, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve been an artist and entrepreneur my entire life—beginning with lemonade stands, car washes, and sewing my own doll clothes.
As a teenager, I sewed (and sold) handbags and shirts, wrote the calligraphy for wedding invitations, made jewelry, and sketched my fashion and home designs. However, I made a choice against a career in art and design twice—once when heading to college and once when nearing the finish.
Instead, I completed my Master’s in Nutrition and became a Registered Dietitian. I also love food!
I practiced in the field for 13 years, eventually fulfilling my goal of building my own nutrition counseling private practice. But my passion for art, design, crafting, and the creative side of dietetics was always tugging at me. My husband and I were remodeling homes in our “spare” time. In 2019, I closed my practice and we started planning our long-desired move to Nashville.
I started Honeybee Home Company in early 2021 to fully pursue home organization, design, decorating, and remodeling. I integrate my nutrition expertise in designs often and also share my gardening, cooking, and nutrition knowledge on my social channels. I’m extremely passionate about what I do!
A personalized, well-designed space surrounds us with precious memories and also operates efficiently—saving time and reducing stress, allowing us to enjoy a healthier lifestyle and the things we’d rather be doing!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I feel like the road has been relatively smooth. I chalk that up to optimism, hard work, and blessings/luck, plus my supportive husband.
Of course, there are bumps in the road and the struggles that small business owners face—wearing all the hats, etc. Are definitely stressful at times. But it’s just in my blood!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m organizing, designing, and decorating for clients in their homes. My projects have ranged the entire spectrum from drawer organization and room arrangement to full gut remodels and home additions.
My designs are uniquely personal, creative, thoughtful, and very functional. As a maximalist myself, I’m a master of optimizing space to hold all your favorite things! My personal style is a little bohemian and eclectic, and I’m known for my ability to happily blend varying furnishings and patterns. My husband and I are DIYers and do a lot of projects and renovation work ourselves.
My counseling experience as a dietitian gives me a different skillset and perspective when it comes to understanding clients’ design goals and needs. Since I come from a scientific field, I design from an analytical perspective in addition to a creative one. I pay a great deal of attention to detail within the broad picture.
I’m always proud when I begin with a blank canvas and end with a space that is functional for a client and representative of them and their family. Building something from nothing is very rewarding. The smiles, squeals, and sighs of relief when a client is happy with their space—or even just an organized drawer—are the best!
I understand how good it feels and I’m just as excited.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Always believing that each opportunity or obstacle that is presented to me is happening for a reason—even when I don’t know what it is yet—and has the potential to result in something spectacular!
Even the harder experiences can be looked at in a positive light for the lessons they have taught me. I use all my experiences to grow and make improvements going forward, so hopefully, I avoid making the same mistake twice!
And when something seemingly goes wrong, I often find that the end product is even better.
