Today we’d like to introduce you to Kamilla Wade.
Kamilla, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story. It all started with someone simply dropping the thought of me selling my cookies in 2020. I’d thought about it prior but never really gave it much thought. God had placed the idea in my head. I had a one-year-old and felt too consumed with being a stay-at-home wife and mom. I was also really active at my church. None of those things have changed. And, if I’m being honest, I wasn’t confident that people would want to buy cookies from me. It wasn’t until March 2022 that I built up the confidence to attempt selling my cookies. My husband and a close friend were in my ear, boosting my confidence. Then, I made some cookies for a family friend, and they mentioned they’d purchase them if I were to sell them. That was my confirmation from God. I knew God had been nudging me. He wouldn’t allow me to dismiss the idea. So, I prayed and posted my business name, Kam’s Cookie Treats, and I’d be selling a few different flavor drop cookies. I immediately had a few people’s inboxes to support. Then in May, my sister asked me to make decorated sugar cookies for my nephew’s graduation dinner. That was the start of a new adventure and when my business took off. I slowly had a few people ask me to make decorative sugar cookies while still taking orders for my drop cookies. It was a work in progress. I found that I started to improve with each set that I did. I sometimes got nervous or stressed about some designs before starting them. However, I pray before each set and get to work. With each set that I take on, I amaze myself with each new design. I often say that this is a God gift. It truly is, and I’m thankful. The funny thing about my cookie business is that I never planned to add decorative sugar cookies to the mix. I wanted to change people’s perspective of how they viewed drop cookies and how they can be great treats to have a baby shower, birthday party, etc. I still bake my drop cookies and love them. I still want to change that perspective. Decorative sugar cookies just happen to be what’s requested most these days. I love the way it allows me to be creative. Again, I’m thankful that God gifted me with this gift.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, but I can’t say it’s been hard either. I struggled with confidence early on. I struggled with knowing how much to charge appropriately—even getting the icing consistently correct sometimes. I’ve learned being self-taught it’s a lot of trial and error. It’s a lot of practice and sometimes late at night. Being a stay-at-home mom, I’m also entertaining an almost 2 year old daily. So, you can only imagine how many stopping moments I have during the day when trying to decorate cookies. Struggles come and go. It’s about learning and moving past them.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Kam’s Cookie Treats is something that I’m very proud to say that I started. My slogan is “Fresh Baked Treats Made With Love.” I specialize in cookies. From my drop cookies, such as chocolate chip, sugar, oatmeal raisin, and coconut cookie, to name a few, to my decorative cut-out sugar cookies. Each is made with love. I honestly aim to please and pray that people taste the love put in each cookie. I’ve had many sleepless nights staying up to ensure that my customer’s orders were ready for pickup the next day. I can’t say that I’m known for just one type of cookie because my customer base varies. I will say that my Oatmeal raisin, sugar, and chocolate chip are among the favorites. With the recent addition of coconut cookies, they’ve become popular as well. There are many other flavor options as well. I have a customer base that only orders drop cookies. However, I’ve also been blessed to have many people request that I make their decorative sugar cookies. I have repeat customers. If you know anything about the cookie business, that’s a blessing. It assures me that I’m on the right track.
What sets me apart from others? I’d say the taste of my cut-out sugar cookies. They have more of a shortbread cookie taste, and the overall cookie with the icing isn’t overly sweet. I’ve won people over who have admitted that they don’t like a sugar cookie but do like mine. That says a lot. I believe that this also sets me apart from others. I know that God has his hands on my business. I try to deliver the best customer service experience possible when working with each customer. I think about how I’d like the interaction to be if I were the purchaser.
What am I most proud of brand-wise? That my work speaks for itself. I recently learned that there were individuals following my business that I never would’ve thought knew it existed. I’m proud of my growth just within the last year. I often taken aback when checking my Facebook business page and seeing how my following is growing, how many people view my work, and the overall growth.
I take Kam’s Cookie Treats seriously. I honestly love what I do. I love giving people tasty cookies. I love giving people more than just pretty cookies. I want people, the readers, and current and future customers, to know that I put 100% of myself into the task they give me. I can give you a cookie that’s beautifully decorated and one that also tastes delicious, in addition to an excellent customer service experience. This is a gift that God has given me, and I don’t take it for granted. So, if someone is curious about my work or interested, take a look at my Facebook and Instagram pages (Kam’s Cookie Treats). They can inbox to order. I offer drop cookie and decorative cut-out sugar cookie designs, and I ship.
To wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Kam’s Cookie Treats has helped me learn about myself and who I could be over the last year. I never knew I could be as creative as I’ve been. I love to bake. My 2 year old son even knows when mommy is working and what I’m doing. He even attempts to imitate or try to help me. I’m thankful to have the support of my husband, family, and many friends. They push me when I’m not as confident. I can honestly say that God opened this door and has opened up a future of endless possibilities for me. I owe all thanks to God for my business and where it’s headed in the future.
