Meet Zac Chase

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zac Chase.

Hi Zac, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Nobody in my family is musical. My interest in hip hop started in middle school when I got my older brother’s old mp3 player. Until then, I never had the means to explore my taste in music. And I was a quiet kid. I have a distinct memory of barrelling through Lil Wayne’s discography during the long bus rides of a 7th-grade school trip to Washington, D.C., with my head against the window. I still kept to myself most of the time. But I was soaking in whatever I could get my hands on. I was a sponge.

My teachers, parents, and I had all noticed that I was a skilled creative writer for assignments and essays. I think it was only a matter of time until I tried my hand at song writing. Getting into Kendrick Lamar and Mac Miller more around 2012 taught me that everyone has a valid perspective to share, and I began to embrace my introverted personality. This sponge was about to squeeze something out.

My first music release came at the end of my junior year of high school. It was a mixtape called Chasing Italy that I released with a friend. Unmixed, unmastered, and produced with free YouTube beats, we physically distributed them to student body. My friend never wrote another song again, but I had become addicted to the song writing process and determined to explore this creative outlet. I entered and exited The University of Georgia as a slightly different person, but I was still learning about the depths of my mind. I began performing in Athens, GA, opening another energetic avenue on my musical roadmap. Since then I’ve released over 50 songs, including two full length projects and five EPs.

Moving to Nashville at the end of 2020 will probably be a life-changing decision. The local hip-hop scene is flourishing, and I’m excited to play a role in it. 7th grade me would crap his pants if he heard the projects I’ve glued to the horizon. I just released Ignorant Observations of a Malleable Mind, essentially the footnotes of my first year in Nashville. Ignorance fuels the sponge.

Let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve always been a disciplined independent worker but working for years as a solo act has frustrated me. I had a hard time getting out of my head when I lacked confidence. My ego death this past year shed light on different facets of my self-discipline. I take pride in what this one-person army is willing to do to understand himself. Understanding the world comes next.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Zac Chase is a SPONGE (Some People Only Need Good Energy). Born with a quiet yet joyful disposition, he spent his early chapters patiently listening to and observing the world around him. He began song writing toward the end of high school but only started experimenting with his comfort zone through his college experiences in Athens, Georgia. Learning how to absorb insights from his micro-environments took practice efficiently. Plunged face first into adulthood against his will, Zac brought his tenacious awareness to Nashville, Tennessee, as 2020 came to a close. He ingests everyday interactions, studies storytelling and world-building in film and literature, and trusts his subconscious and dreams to light the path. What goes in must come out; Zac exudes these once foreign ideas back into the world through his music. The sponge cycle is constant and always will be. This sponge doesn’t have a choice. I’m most proud of following my gut to Nashville on my own. At this moment in time, I believe my purpose on this Earth is to give more than I take.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I play zero instruments. I have never eaten a strip of bacon in my life.
