Rising Stars: Meet Michael O’Sullivan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael O’Sullivan.

Hi Michael, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
After graduating from Marquette University in 2010 with a degree in Advertising, I joined the Jesuit Volunteer Corps for two years.

During that time, I worked alongside the Lakota (Sioux) people in South Dakota at a 100+-year-old Mission, serving as both an on-air radio personality at the local radio station and a full-time media specialist.

Following my volunteer years, I traveled the country as a Development Officer for the same Mission where I had previously volunteered.

Wanting to combine my love for storytelling, marketing, and media, in 2015, I launched my own production company, Motivation Media Inc. As Creative Director, I have produced video content for organizations of all shapes and sizes. I live in Mobile with my beautiful wife, Davanne, and three small humans.

We were voted Best Video Company in Mobile in 2021, and are currently nominated for that again, as well as Best Filmmaker (results pending). We are a small company at the moment, but we are committed to creating the highest quality of work, getting clients a return on their investments, and having a little fun doing what we love.

We were recently asked to document and film a company by the name of OptSpot as their team met up at The Car Wash Show in Nashville. It is a fun glimpse into a booming industry, and OptSpot treated several of their clients to a nice private event with author Donald Miller.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh, man. Smooth at times, but let’s be honest, that’s the exception to the rule.

I started my company with the intention of being a social media management company until I could scrape together enough money to start buying camera equipment. I could see the great potential of social media and knew it was the future of marketing, but unfortunately, the businesses I approached when first moving to Mobile didn’t agree.

So, at some point, I had to make a call and that call was to go all-in on video production. It was slow-going at first, but there were a lot of wins along the way as I would make a new connection or learn and implement a new skill.

In the last 7 years, I’ve had the privilege of working with some amazing people. During that same period, I’ve also worked with some folks who would do anything they could to make a quick buck at any expense.

Through these various relationships, I learned some of my toughest lessons, but lessons that helped me learn who I wanted to be as a business owner and member of the community (ethical, honest, and invested extension of your team, etc).

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
At Motivation Media Inc., we are a full-service video production agency.

We specialize in impactful storytelling for businesses and organizations looking to engage their audiences/communities in specific ways and achieve a result (return on investment, raise funds, sell a product/service, etc.).

We are different in that we are truly focused on the success of our clients.

We don’t just want to collect a paycheck, we want to give our clients tools they can use in strategic ways to achieve success, whether they have a marketing team in place and we need to work in conjunction with them or if they have no marketing team and need additional guidance, we believe that video done right can create lasting impact.

One of the ways we do this is through the creation of micro-content (think reels, shorts, etc.).

What does success mean to you?
When different variables, people, and skill sets are combined to achieve a win-win-win situation, that’s how’d I’d define success. In life and business, success isn’t a one-sided affair. If it is, it’s probably a lonely outcome.
