Rising Stars: Meet Mark Short

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Short.

Hi Mark, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
So ever since I was a kid, I loved to take photos and was always taking pictures of nature, etc.

The outdoors was my first real passion. I was in College for another program and I was in the photography class for one of my courses at the time.

And the professor of that course was impressed with my photography and pulled me aside and talked to me about submitting a portfolio for the photography programs at different schools. So I went home after that and thought about what he had said to me. And decided why not apply, so I did and got in.

Once School was over I realized I wanted to shoot people and create imagery around fashion and beauty. So I moved to Toronto and hit the pavement as they say. After years of hard work and numerous times of wanting to give up, I am now truly happy with where my photography has come and gone.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I don’t think it is a smooth road for any artist, if it is then I don’t think you can call yourself an artist, lol.

But no it hasn’t and I am happy it hasn’t as that is what makes me better as an artist. Being an artist requires you to go through all the steps, whether they are good or bad.

And the times they seem to be at the worst are when they become the greatest moments, as they are the learning curves!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
So I am a portrait and fashion photographer, I specialize in shooting men’s portraits and fashion.

I think the proudest thing about my career is that I have been lucky to be able to keep shooting the things I love and get paid for it. But I am proud of any situation I am in, cause each photo shoot is different and every time I learn something about my subject and about myself.

I think what makes me stand out is the consistency of my work and not being a yes man. I truly believe you should stick with what you are good at and keep going from there, and the more you practice the better you will be at that thing you are good at.

What does success mean to you?
I think success comes in many forms, but when I think of what makes me successful or what defines success for me. Involves when I am shooting, and I ask myself the same questions, did I capture the person correctly?

Did I make the client feel great/involved? and the most important question I ask is, did they leave feeling excited and pumped about what we just shot. now that to me is the greatest success, seeing my clients excited about what we shot
