Conversations with Merit Sander

Today we’d like to introduce you to Merit Sander.

Hi Merit, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I’ve always been creative, and I stumbled upon becoming a makeup artist about 15 years ago. As a theater major, I became interested in all different makeup styles. I started working at a makeup counter when I applied for jobs years ago. My first day working the counter was Black Friday. That day was crazy, but I loved it. I started working and developing my interest in makeup. Eventually, I started working at a salon and started learning more. I read, studied, and practiced every style of makeup I could. From doing lashes to airbrushes covering tattoos, it all became what I developed my passion for. Now I look back and see that my career has grown more and more, and I’ve achieved goals I never thought I would be doing. I’ve done makeup for commercials, Ted Talks, fashion editorials, NYFW, Charleston Fashion Week, and television. I also love teaching and have a love for doing bridal makeup as well.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When I started doing makeup, I didn’t know what to focus on. Doing makeup from theater to getting someone ready for a tv show is completely different. I apprenticed and studied everything I could. I didn’t live in a huge city, so it became where I could learn this? What can I watch? YouTube became quite helpful, as also books. I still cherish the Kevyn Aucoin makeup books because they helped show everything to a newer makeup artist. You’ve got to have the drive and want to know everything you can in this career.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a makeup artist of 15 years and an esthetician of 4 years. I’m very known for natural beauty makeup for brides. My motto has always been “inner beauty amped up,” For me, it shows that everyone is naturally beautiful. I just get to highlight and add a little glow. I’m most proud of my work for New York Fashion Week. I applied, hoping I’d get picked, and it truly was an amazing experience! What sets me apart is trying to focus on skincare and prepping everyone to feel comfortable and relaxed before even doing makeup. It helps to have a great canvas, but also, from actors to brides, I try to build a relationship with each client.
