Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Gatson.
Hi Michael, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I graduated from the University of Arkansas with an Architecture degree. My first job in the field was creating conceptual drawings and working sets (fabrication instructions) for a fine custom woodworking company. After seeing my designs come to life, I wanted to know if I could create not only the design but also build it. A friend of mine commissioned me to design and build his entertainment center. After that project, I was hooked. I’ve been designing and building since 2009, but I’ve been in business since 2018. I’ve designed and built everything from cutting boards to king-sized beds.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. I’m a creator at heart, but the business side has been challenging. Having to handle both has been a learning process that is still ongoing. I’m thankful for the things I’ve learned, though. Space has also been a concern at times. With Nashville prices being so high, I’ve been fortunate to find and operate in a maker’s space that keeps my overhead cost reasonable.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My business is IGI Designs which is a custom woodworking shop. The “IGI” stands for “I Got Ideas.” I can take a project from concept/design to fabrication and installation. That is what sets us apart! You can come to us with as much or as little information, and we can take it from there. Quality and affordable woodworking has grown into a shop that not only designs and fabricates but can handle CNC and Laser personalized projects and has substantially grown over the last year. In 2021 we broke into retail wholesaling with our Nashville-themed coaster sets.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you, or support you?
Any makers that would like to collaborate should reach out; I’m always happy to create! To support, please follow on any of our socials!
