Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Beatty.
Hi Angela, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am a native of Nashville, as is most of my family, going back many generations. I knew from a young age that being a mom and wife is what I genuinely wanted. My mom was a phenomenal homemaker. I watched her cook and take care of the family. As I got older, married, and had my 1st child shortly after getting out of the military, I knew that diving head first into all things “home” was meant for me. I learned to cook homemade meals from scratch because it was healthier and more cost-effective. I never enjoyed working in corporate America, but I did until I had my 2nd child 15 years later. Since having my daughter 7 years ago, I have enjoyed spending time with her, teaching her to cook, and helping her to discover her creative gifts and talents. Food and home decor are at the heart of what I do for my family. A couple of years ago, I turned my love for interior design into a business that allows me to work with my clients at my own pace without taking away from my family time. My cooking and baking skills are something I love to share with others. I keep my dishes pretty but practical for anyone to make.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a smooth road?
The only obstacles were me. You have to pour into yourself and your goals as much as you do into your family, which became a balancing issue for me. I enjoyed doing all that I was for them, but I had to remind myself that I am a woman, not just a mother, wife, or friend. My relationship with God kept me grounded in those moments and pushed me to keep going for myself and my goals.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My passion is to give and help others in any way possible which is what began my business journey. There are technically 3 components to what I call my “business.”
First, there is my food blog and social media page called “Life Inspirations by Angela.” I realized once I began sharing my food pics and cooking recipes on social media that so many people were inspired by them, but they weren’t anything special, I thought. I cooked basic home-style dishes. I began to get flooded with questions about how I made my food, and people would send me messages about other dishes they wanted me to help them with. Our home quickly became the house to come to if you wanted a good home-cooked meal. When my son was in high school, his friends would sometimes sit on my front porch until I got home to eat if I wasn’t there. I am most proud that I have been able to share my gifts and talents with others and have seen some of my closest friends cook homemade meals that they are also proud of. I walked one of my friends through making mac & cheese from scratch over the phone one Thanksgiving morning. She says she still makes it the same way, and everyone enjoys it.
Second, there was my love for interior design. I began to have many people as me to help them with decorating their homes or other personal spaces. I would commit my time and energy to this, without pay or compensation. Several of my close friends and family members encouraged me to make a business out of it since I was already doing it so that’s what I did. “Simply Intentional” is my interior design and decorating business. I enjoy helping others have a house that feels like home.
Last but not least, my 501c3 non-profit called, “Come Up Higher.” In 2016, I opened my home to women who lived in my area to come and enjoy a home cooked meal and learn something new. My first meeting I had 13 women who showed up. I would always have 1 or 2 of the ladies volunteer to teach our group something at each meeting. We have had women show how to make short and long term goals and carry them out, how to organize your purse, how to properly apply make-up, how to create a family budget and scheduling system, how to entertain on a budget, etc. Everyone looked forward to these monthly get-togethers and our group grew quickly. I would sometimes have 20+ women in my home. I decided I was going to use the same name I gave our meetings and turn it into a non-profit for women called “Come Up Higher.” The purpose of this non-profit is to help women grow and develop in different areas so they are more confident & secure women, mothers, wives, sisters and friends. We have raised money to buy sewing machines in Africa for women to learn the trade making clothes that will allow them to provide for their children and families. We have also donated to our local women’s shelters and passed out basic essentials to the homeless. There is no better feeling than helping others. We plan on reaching even more women this year!
What do you think about luck?
I don’t believe in luck per say, but I do believe that hard work, diligence, and the favor of God play a major role in accomplishing what you desire. I believe anyone can do anything they were created to do.
