Today we’d like to introduce you to Piper Madison.
Hi Piper, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I realized my passion for songwriting when I was 12. I had a friend from acting class who committed suicide, and when that happened, I turned to write to deal with my grief. I found myself sitting over the piano, trying to process my emotions, and before I knew it, I had written a song. Songwriting became a place where I could explore my mind and emotions and channel my feelings. My parents have always supported my endeavors, so when I was 16, my dad helped me produce my first album of original songs. He had been collecting music recording gear over the years and interning at a music studio to learn how to produce. After I released my first record, “Who’s Running Your Mind?” I was able to garner some success, landing on the Billboard charts with a remix of my song “Little Bit of Rain,” having my music featured in films, and performing at SXSW and other music festivals. Then, in 2020, COVID happened. I was already halfway through production on my second album when the whole world shut down. We ended up packing up all our things (including our music studio) and driving across the country back to our hometown of Louisville, Kentucky. We turned an old bedroom into our makeshift recording studio, and it was there that I finished my second album, “How Do I Love?” which came out in October 2021. “Clear Mind Blue Skies” from this most recent album landed on a Spotify editorial playlist after its release, which was a big deal to me as an indie artist. Since the release of “How Do I Love?” I’ve been performing around the Louisville area as a one-woman band, using a live looping set-up. You can catch me at Churchill Downs on September 15th, performing for Twilight Thursday!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being an independent artist has been freeing but also challenging. Doing everything yourself comes with many learning curves, but ultimately is a very rewarding experience. I love knowing how to do everything and continuing to learn something new every day. My family is my team, and we wear all the hats you would have at a label: from recording and production to press photography, album art, marketing, etc.
Another challenge I’ve faced is that of self-comparison. That “big break” is not exactly predictable in the entertainment industry. I used to compare myself a lot, but through my journaling and meditation practices, I realized everyone is on their path. And it is truly not about the end goal but rather about building something that can connect us all simply enjoying the creative process.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
My music and art are infused with an emphasis on self-love and wellness, and each song I write carries an intentional message. I often feel very vulnerable in my music, which I think is what makes it unique. I’ve discovered that when I write from my heart, I can create the most honest, meaningful music that I hope inspires listeners to be more reflective in their own lives. I believe we all have a story to tell.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
I think my favorite childhood memory was filming my first tv show. I was 12 when I booked the role of Zelphaba, a magician that everyone thought was a witch, on the Nickelodeon show “100 Things To Do Before High School.” I felt lucky to be there, doing what I love alongside other passionate, creative individuals.
