Inspiring Conversations with Meg Anderson of East Nashville Flower Shop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meg Anderson.

Hi Meg, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Hi! I’m Meg Anderson, CEO + Creative Director of Foliage, LLC. Artistic intuition has always come naturally to me. But my educational background in photography, art, and design has fine-tuned my role as Creative Director here. With every project I take on, I dream big, painting with the big brush first and then working to fill in the details. Starting in 2012, as the owner of another creative small business, I gained invaluable experience navigating travel logistics for various events in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Santa Clara, Osaka, Seoul, and other places around the globe. My journey as a florist began in 2019 when I launched Foliage. Despite the pandemic, Foliage has consistently grown ever since then. We now have 2 divisions: Foliage Floral Design Studio + East Nashville Flower Shop. Foliage Floral Design Studio focuses on event florals, bespoke weddings, corporate florals, and editorial floral styling. East Nashville Flower Shop is our retail floral experience that delivers luxury flowers to the Metro Nashville Area. As a native of Nashville with an incurable case of wanderlust, I never tire of traveling, and I’m forever grateful for each long-distance project we take on. Wherever you are in the world, we’re happy to create custom-designed and expressive florals for your event.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Every business has struggles, and ours is no different. There are slower months and busier ones. Some launches don’t go quite as I hoped, and ones that surprise me. The biggest challenge for me as CEO was learning to view the business ebbs and flows from a non-emotional mindset. I like to view the ebbs as opportunities to learn and grow. As an entrepreneur, if we approach a difficult period of business as a period of “failure,” then it doesn’t allow us any room to see what was working + not working during that period. It instead just goes straight to that part of the brain that says, “this whole thing isn’t working.” I’ve realized that a “slow season” is the time when we can best connect with our future clients and focus on their needs through marketing. It’s also a perfect time for our team to grow together and create systems and workflows that result in a huge benefit when we’re in the busy days again.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
East Nashville Flower Shop is a division of Foliage, LLC that specializes in luxury floral designs for everyday occasions. It’s our retail flower shop experience for our clients. We deliver to the Metro Nashville area and are known for stunning designs and top-quality ingredients. Our customer service is top-notch, and we have the google reviews to prove it! We are an independently owned and run florist, meaning our designs are created by our Creative Director just for ENFS. We are very excited that we’ll be opening up our first retail storefront in August of 2022 in the heart of East Nashville at 5 Points.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Learning to trust and choose possibility over doubt has been my most important lesson as an entrepreneur. Once I realized that it is possible to create a brand that sells at the price point required for a sustainable business and that people WILL buy from us, all sorts of other possibilities and ideas opened up for us.
