Rising Stars: Meet Jerry Tyler Watson of Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jerry Tyler Watson.

Hi Jerry Tyler; we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I am originally from Ridgeland, MS. After graduating high school, I dreamed of attending fashion design school, but I followed everyone else and went to a community college. One year after being in college, I knew it was not for me. In August 2016, my friend and I decided to move to Nashville. Moving in, I did not have a job or friends. My first job was at Rhino Staging, building stages for concerts that stopped in town. I then decided to start working at Nordstrom. I was there a year; I was a manager at a boutique in Green Hills; that’s when everything changed. I got laid off, and I was scared about what to do. I was so close to going back to Mississippi, but I stayed. I got a job at Element Salon and apprenticed through them. I then decided to take my career another way and became a stylist at Drybar in Capital View. Every day, I would say, “I am going to style celebrity clientele,” repeatedly. When the pandemic began, I was laid off and did not know if I wanted to return there or not. I ended up not returning, and before that, I was reaching out to my current boss on Instagram. We met for coffee, she took me on set, and after almost a year of shadowing, they offered me an offer. I love what I do now. Being able to showcase all of the hats I wear is amazing. I am a hairstylist, wardrobe stylist, tailor, graphic designer, fashion designer, and a great handyman.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There were a few struggles along the way. Nothing in life is simple and easy, even if people make it seem that way.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I style hair and style clothing, and I do freelance graphic design. I think I’m most known for my blowouts in Nashville. I give all the credit to Gaby Doss for teaching me almost everything I know, hair styling-wise. I think my personality sets me apart from others. I appear as a shy and standoffish person, but I am not.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love the music and how accessible it is to us. The least thing I like is the size. Nashville is becoming very small to me.
