Today we’d like to introduce you to Dana Lester.
Hi Dana, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I launched the first Black Barn Market & Craft Sale in November 2022 with nothing more than an idea and a heart for supporting local, small businesses. After seeing how many talented makers in our community needed a place to share their work, I realized my family’s outdoor event space—Events at East 96—was the perfect backdrop for bringing people together. What began as a simple vision to provide an outlet for artisans has quickly grown into a beloved community tradition, celebrating creativity, connection, and the spirit of shopping local.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been mostly a smooth road, and I’m incredibly grateful for how naturally the Black Barn Markets have grown. Still, with each event, I intentionally look for ways to improve the experience for both vendors and visitors. We’ve now hosted nine markets, and every single one has taught me something—whether it’s refining the layout, adjusting traffic flow, improving communication, or anticipating the needs of a larger crowd. Each market brings its own small challenges, but those moments have helped shape the event into what it is today: a well-run, welcoming, and ever-evolving space for our community.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I handle every part of the Black Barn Market & Craft Sales—from coordinating and bookkeeper to social media, advertising, and all the in-between roles that make the event happen. I hold three a year, always the second Saturday in June, October, and November. I specialize in creating smooth, community-focused markets that elevate local makers, and I’m known for being highly organized and detail-driven. I’m most proud that the market has become a place where small businesses can shine. What sets me apart is the passion I pour into every detail and my commitment to making each market better than the last.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
In the next 5–10 years, I see the Black Barn Market continuing to grow in size, quality, and community impact. I envision bringing in even more local makers, expanding our events, and creating new features. My hope is that the market becomes a long-standing tradition at Events at East 96—one that people look forward to season after season and that small businesses rely on as a meaningful place to connect, sell, and shine.
