Today we’d like to introduce you to Demonte Miller.
Hi Demonte, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Post Covid i had my own little revival. I had went through a season of change that led me to be evicted from a place i never got to live in. I ended up with thousands in debt and nowhere to stay, at least not in nashville. I stood outside the U-Haul storage unit that had one dingy light in it, with my entire life packed into it. I had to leave it behind. Years of my life, gone. I couldn’t afford to keep the things i spent all my money on, so i packed up two suit cases from a two bedroom and spent the next year living on someone’s living room floor. It was humbling to go from a beautiful apartment in Murfreesboro, to the floor of a studio apartment off of Charlotte ave. I found myself working a job that took me 3 hrs round trip to get to each day by bus and on foot, while giving up half the profits just for a place to stay and i cried out to the Lord, is this all? Is this my life? I loved the people i worked with so no offense but this was not where i wanted to end up. It would be another year of grueling work and moving and been put out before i would find what my calling was, to start my own media company
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Well from the time that i began working toward this dream, i saw just how big of a challenge i’d been given by God. I gave him my life, and he gave me a dream, it just wasn’t already built. This is where the dilemma set in. How can i put together all of this with no money? What am i gonna do? I noticed that the only thing i could do was start. I began to test my skills at making short films on youtube and all other social media and though it was better than what i was making before, you had to be my momma to care about anything i was putting out. I noticed it took too long to get to the point, and everyone was too busy to care about my effort. It was put up or shut up time and just because God said to do it, don’t make it any easier. So i went to school, youtube academy, but hey i was on a budget. After a few trips to the library, a lot of moves, and 6 months, i wrote my first ever screenplay, Jalisa’s Juxtaposition. In the next 3 months i wrote two more that i won’t disclose yet, unless you’re buying (wink). But, this was it, i finally made it! Or so i thought
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
After creating three very thorough and worked over scripts that tell some of the best stories to date, shameless plug, i realized i had no way to reach my target audience all the way in Nashville or little ole Chattanooga. So though i spent a while working on the writing side, if i wanted to sell a book i would’ve wrote one! I had to figure out a way to turn this film into a movie. I went to the little known secret every poor writer with no connection goes to…EMAIL. Yes! Super busy people in LA would someone see my needle in a haystack email and turn me into a millionaire!!! P.S. it didn’t happen. So i cried to God and asked what now? You led me here, what do i do? I can’t be a writer or filmmaker until i get someone to buy my projects! It was quiet for a while, then he spoke. And pay attention to this next part, he told me i already was a writer. I already created films in the past, just use my abilities and create. Simply profound but that’s how i became a media company owner. I work on self based documentaries where i play the character of Me, navigating life and building the exact company i’m recording about, all over social media. I also write films
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is the story. I could watch two squirrels battle to the death if i know it was a betrayal. Like they hit the nuts together and when it was time for the winter, one came back to no nut! I’m glued. I just want to be the best storyteller ever. I never found something i was good at as a kid, and this was given to me and i truly feel, i will be the best storyteller there was, outside of the bible. I think the story is what matters, so if i can say what matters most, i can help shape the world into someone good for everyone
