Today we’d like to introduce you to Kris D’Amico.
Kris, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve been shooting photos since late in high school, but I actually went to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, for graphic design. After realizing that was not my path, I switched to film, fell in love with photography. For several years, I shot music, art, and really whatever came along, but in the spring of 2007, I was invited to join the dream team of insanely talented creatives at Cabedge.com.
These guys were building $50,000 websites when people were not even sure what the internet was for! Needless to say, a year as their director of photography took my career in a whole different direction. After that experience, I started focusing on products, durable goods, and things that could be bought and sold primarily online. 13 years later, I’m truly humbled to continue to work with some of the largest brands and biggest names there are.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The largest obstacle I’ve faced along the way is to stay positively focused. Regardless of the situation, you have to keep moving forward! I’ve done huge shoots where people take six months to pay or in one instance not at all. Worked on that campaigns that should be the only thing in my portfolio that end up never seeing the light of day for one reason or another. I think about the countless emails and phone calls that I’ve made that never get returned. It’s hard to stay positive some days, even some weeks! But all things being equal, I keep going back to: we can’t help how we feel, but we can control our reaction. Keep smiling, keep working, that sun will rise tomorrow.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My work recently really revolves around adding economic value to my clients. Everyone wants to look as good as they really are, so my team and I really work hard to execute that idea. It’s been a fun journey to move from my first e-commerce shoot, shooting Christmas decor for Kirklands, to now sitting around the table with a whole group of really smart creatives to craft visuals that make our clients shine!
I’m very proud of the team of creatives that puts up with me on a regular basis. From my guys that light the sets to the camera nerds who have forgotten more than I will ever know about these cameras we run, they are family!
What were you like growing up?
What was I like growing up? Man, so I was born in Springfield, MO but then over the next 10 years, we lived in Italy and Sicily, Connecticut, Minnesota, Ohio and finally moved to Tennessee the summer before my 11th birthday. I am an Eagle scout, so I pretty much lived every weekend outside. My mom grew up on a farm so I learned how to raise fruit trees, keep a garden, and can everything. My dad is a local physician and businessman. So, when I was growing up he was very busy, but when he could we did lots of movies, mostly action and sci-fi.
Dad still loves a good James Bond film. Naturally, I’m a huge Spielberg and Francis Ford Coppola fan. Also, 80’s child so big Star Wars nerd to this day. I’ve always gotten nervous with a new crowd, but I think most that know me for 5 minutes say that I’ve never met a stranger. I attribute that to all the moving around and having to make friends on the fly.
