Community Highlights: Meet Alex Lawwill of Sol Essentials

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Lawwill.

Alex, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey started in 2020 (little did I know). I have always loved the light and warmth of a candle, and would light one in every room for hours (still do). At the time, my only intention was to figure out how to re-use my old jars so that I didn’t have to keep making frequent trips to the store to buy more.

I got curious about how to make them and ordered myself a starter kit. Once I learned the art of pouring candles, not only did I solve my personal problem but I got even more curious about the ingredients, and started to learn about all the chemicals and toxins commonly found in most retail store candles.

I then expanded my journey with friends and family, and one of my friends said to me “you should really make a business out of this.” It wasn’t until that moment I had a fire light inside of me, and decided to jump in head first. His words gave me the courage to experiment beyond just a hobby, to be of outward service, and share my light with the world.

I had this deep knowing that I wanted to create an experience far beyond candles but I didn’t know what that meant at the time. I originally named my brand Jazzy Scents, but that didn’t feel right. During this same time, I had just embarked on my yoga teacher training journey and started to explore spirituality and what that meant for me. I was particularly enthralled by feminine (lunar) and masculine (solar) energy and finding a balance between the two.

I felt a piercing nudge within and knew I wanted to offer a connected experience centered around internal wellness as I started to uncover and discover pieces of myself I didn’t know existed. That is the moment Sol Essentials was born. I started to share my candles with my yoga community and researched the ins and outs of starting a business.

I immediately connected with my brother, who offered his logic and reason to support all of my creative tendencies through the logistical side of things. I also re-connected with an old friend from high school to design my logo and website. With the support of family and friends, Sol Essentials officially sprouted into existence on December 7th, 2020, and hasn’t stopped evolving ever since. I offer Solar and Lunar collections that capture the essence of feminine and masculine energy through unique scent profiles, igniting day and nighttime energies.

To me, the light of a candle symbolizes so much more than what meets the surface. It is the first spark of curiosity and a call home to your personal safety, where you can explore and connect with your inner world without judgment.

It is your tangible reminder to ignite your light, listen to your intuition, and find peace and calm within. Now, my mission is to create a safe community space, like a warm blanket, where people can unapologetically explore and embody their soul truth.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not, many bumps along the way! I work full time at Amazon and ever since I started this journey I find myself working almost seven days a week, but the difference is, that the work I do for Sol doesn’t feel like work.

That being said, the biggest challenge for me is time management and learning to say no and accept when things don’t go according to plan. I tend to say yes way too quickly and then wind up overloading myself with candles to pour and social media to plan.

I have been working on slowing down my impulsive tendencies over the past year and leaning into my intuition more to support decisions and not dive into everything at once. Slow and steady is the way.

As you know, we’re big fans of Sol Essentials. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am the heart beating loud and proud behind Sol Essentials, and what separates me from other companies is the community and wellness experience that expands beyond just candles. I currently offer two uniquely crafted collections: Solar and Lunar.

The Solar collection scents are inspired by masculine energy and include flavors such as citrus and florals to invigorate the senses. The lunar collection embodies the divine feminine and contains more earthy scent profiles such as lavender, rosemary, and amber to invite stillness after a long day.

The brand has evolved to “Sol Essentials with Alex” with the goal of instilling a sense of authenticity and personal connection. Recently, I began offering virtual meditation and movement classes in collaboration with Sprinkle Cheer, the yoga community I am a part of. I am slowly weaving in and integrating my own personal studies to initiate a learning environment that can be curated to support individual journeys, one candle spark, deep breath and mindful movement at a time.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I am all about community building and love connecting with local small businesses! I also enjoy learning about others’ journeys and seeing how we can support one another.

I currently sell candles at the Nashville farmers market and partner with Astrid and Aurora to combine forces in their storefront and other local markets. We are in the process of planning an in-person workshop that will encompass candle-making, meditation/yoga, and an aromatherapy experience. So stay on the lookout for more details, we would love to see you there!

Any feedback and collaboration for future events are also welcome! Let’s light up in the community together!
