Today we’d like to introduce you to Bobae Choi.
Hi Bobae, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in Seoul, South Korea, and moved to Hawaii when I was one. I went to elementary school there until I turned 10 and then moved to Nashville, TN. When I was 14, I started writing lyrics and recording myself when I was 16. My father was abusive growing up, but it wasn’t until I was 15 that my parents split up. I grew up in a rough area of Nashville called Antioch, where I got into a lot of trouble and eventually got kicked out of school in 2006. So I was homeschooled until I graduated in 2009. After graduating, I moved back to Hawaii after finding out my father was there. I reached out to him and asked if he could help put me through college as a second chance to see if he had changed. He hadn’t changed and ended up unreasonably kicking me out about a year later. I then tried to join the Air Force but was denied enlistment because of a minor possession charge for marijuana I got in high school, which led me to get kicked out of high school. Not knowing what to do now, my brother told me to try going to Korea and auditioning for Kpop companies. I moved to Korea in 2011 and trained under a Kpop entertainment company for 4 years. I was set to debut in a group called “Highend” but ended up backing out of the contract due to family issues in Nashville and moved back home to my mom in Nashville in 2015. 5 years later, I decided I needed a change feeling stuck and stagnant, so I moved to LA in 2020 to start a new life. But my music has always been with me throughout my entire life.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all. I recently got laid off from work in September 2021, and I have been out of work since then due to inconvenient struggles after another.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
As mentioned earlier, I’m an unsigned hip-hop recording artist. I specialize in storytelling lyrical rap music. I guess you could say that all my music is what I’m most proud of, as it’s not music I made to blow up or become famous. I make music because I always have and probably always will. It’s not something I can control.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My older brother was an underground rapper in Korea named Miniman. Although he never mentored me in music, he was like a father figure to me after my dad left. My mother and my brother are the reason I am who I am. I’m so fortunate to have had them in my life and even happier that they never gave up on me.
