Daily Inspiration: Meet Courtney Nelms

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Nelms.

Courtney, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am Courtney Nelms, a local makeup artist from Memphis, TN. I’d like to think that my story is pretty interesting. During my freshman year at TSU, my close friend taught me how to do my makeup before a Future concert.

As the years progressed, I increased my knowledge by practicing more and more. I had friends that would ask me to do their makeup for certain events but never believed I could do anyone else’s makeup. When nursing school didn’t go as planned, I decided to step out on faith and do something I loved.

In the spring of 2019, is when I created my business Coated by Court Artistry. It started off small but since then, my business has grown tremendously.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has not been smooth at all!

I remember when I first started I couldn’t afford a ring light. Someone gave me 2 LED lights that I had to prop up on the lights in the bathroom of my college apartment. I also worked during school, while trying to do makeup. A lot of times I would go to work late and hungry because my clients always come first.

Also, during the time, I first started, there were many obstacles I faced that wasn’t related to my business. After overcoming those things & graduating college, I feel now is the best time to put my all into makeup.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a makeup artist that specializes in natural beats & glam beats, brow tinting & coming very soon lash extensions. I also provide a service for wig makers/sellers by glamming mannequin heads to promote their wigs. I believe I am most known for my natural beats.

The majority of my clients book the natural faces. I am most proud of my strong work ethic and willingness to learn new techniques. I’m not close to where I want to be in this field, but I’ve made tremendous progress and I’m extremely optimistic about my future in this industry.

I believe what sets me apart from others is my customer service. I consistently WOW my clients with impeccable service and outstanding results. Also, the level of customer service and individualized attention each client receives. For me a face is like a fingerprint, everyone’s unique.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
In the next 5-10 years, I see myself working as a celebrity makeup artist.

I also have dreams of owning my own shop where multiple beauty industries can provide their services in one space. The big shift is everything I am doing for my business now.

From promotion to pop-up shops & enrolling in aesthetician programs, it is all with my business in mind. I also have things coming within the next couple of months that I don’t want to speak about too soon.

  • Natural Glam $55
  • Classic Glam $60
  • Glitter Glam $70
  • Brow Tinting $30
  • Glamour Headz $85
