Today we’d like to introduce you to Luana Sandoval.
Hi Luana, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In 2012, I embarked on a musical journey studying opera singing at the Saarland University in Germany, shaping my passion. Fast forward to 2018, I relocated to New York, gracing venues like the Metropolitan Room alongside pianist Nataliya Medvedovskaya.
Between 2020 and 2022, Nashville became my home, hosting “Songs of My Life,” my TV show where I delved into the musical journeys of diverse songwriters. This March, I realized a dream, founding Devana Records, my label, marking the culmination of a five-year journey since arriving in the United States.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Starting my musical journey from ground zero in the United States was a daunting challenge. Limited by a tight budget, I made mistakes, trusted the wrong people, and faced financial setbacks. However, these struggles became stepping stones, teaching me to trust my intuition. Amid the setbacks, I found the right connections, fostering resilience.
In 2020, I leaped, competing on American Idol. This experience forced me to be resourceful, covering expenses while channeling funds into producing music. The hardships sculpted a path of growth and determination in my musical career.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Known as the “Queen of Melodies,” my gift for crafting songs effortlessly sets me apart. In just 10 minutes, I can weave captivating lyrics and melodies, a skill showcased in my song inspired by Dr. Forbes Riley’s quote, “Life happens for you, not to you,” titled “Smile, It’s Your Best Makeup.” This track gained recognition when my mentor, Dr. Forbes Riley, featured it on her radio show Forbes Factor Live.
My musical journey includes a standout American Idol audition aired on ABC in 2021 and a role in Dolly Parton’s movie, “Mountain Magic Christmas,” where I danced alongside Dolly herself. Collaborating with Madonna’s percussionist, Miroca Paris, led to the creation of “La Soledad.” Hosting “Songs of My Life,” my TV show, I’ve interviewed Nashville’s top songwriters, producing 10 engaging episodes. I was nominated for a Josie Music Award for best performance in the music video One Name by Selah.
Beyond music, my versatility shines as I had a leading role in the TV show “Snapped.” Speaking five languages—German, English, Spanish, French, and Bulgarian—adds a unique dimension to my artistry. While my songwriting mastery lies in English and Spanish, my connection to Bulgarian folk music and dance, expressed through my participation in the New York-based Yasna Voices choir, further defines my diverse and accomplished musical identity.
What makes you happy?
Discovering my greatest happiness lies in living authentically, I’ve embraced life and all its connections. Last October, I courageously came out as gay, breaking free from the burden of hiding. This revelation marked the beginning of a healing journey, as I navigated my first romantic relationship with a woman, confronting unhealed traumas along the way.
This path to healing has been a fertile ground for songwriting, allowing me to forgive myself for past actions and evolve into the best version of who I am. Learning to speak up, and openly communicate my feelings and triggers, has become a crucial part of this transformative process. I can proudly say that I’ve healed from the scars of school bullying, recognizing the power of self-reflection when someone holds a mirror to your struggles.
Living in my truth has become the core of my happiness, a journey of finding myself again. Alongside this, sharing the love of music with others, gracing the stage, and bringing joy to people’s lives through performance adds layers of fulfillment to my authentic existence.
