Today we’d like to introduce you to Sway DiFeo.
Hi Sway, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My work with artists and musicians began with a pure love of art in all its forms. Music can say words you are not able to yourself and art can express emotions a person often cannot. I found myself wanting to help and protect those entertainers that so boldly put themselves out to the public. I started a not-for-profit organization called STArt Now that helps provide them with the tools they need and also serves as an advocacy program for them. Getting to know them and their stories was one of the true great honors of my life. My success in the nonprofit arena leads me to run a music magazine. I was sought out to turn around a failing local magazine called Narrow. I saw its potential and agreed to become their first female managing editor. I brought Narrow to the forefront boosting the online and digital presence covering more national recording artists while still being able to offer spotlights to local and regional talent as well. I focused on photography and meaningful articles while never losing sight that the artisans and their stories were most important.
Running both of these businesses showed me the inequality that still existed, the guidance that was needed, and the need for fair-paid bookings in entertainment. 84 Consulting was born from this knowledge, and I began booking concerts and festivals for bands while also providing them with career guidance and industry knowledge. All of the performers were paid fairly with me, a standard that was lacking in our community, and they were paid regardless of rainouts. 84 Consulting now does everything from music festivals to public relations and media management.
The highlight of running these businesses, past and present, is the opportunity to help shape the role of females in the industry. I have been able to mentor some amazing women as employees and interns. It has been a mark of my success that many of them have now become my equals or surpassed me in their professions.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a female in the entertainment industry, it was not an easy road, especially regarding behind-the-scenes work. I had to work three times as hard to gain the respect of my peers. I had to push myself harder, work later, and produce more in order to be looked at as an equal.
One of the hardest parts of the job is the stress level. Will there be enough people in attendance? Will the musicians show up on time and be able to play? Will ticket sales push us into profit? Are all of the small details that matter taken care of? As women we tend to hold ourselves to a higher standard, this was something I struggled with early on in my career. Admitting weakness is not easy for women in positions of power. Once I learned that a solid good team could overcome any perceived lacking the job became easier and less stressful. I have taken my struggle and flipped it. I have done fashion shows about women’s empowerment, hosted International Womans Day concerts, and been the returning judge of the Surf Girl Pro all-female DJ competition.
I built a team that was forged on progressivism, hard work, ethic, and creativity. A lot of my success is due to them and their dedication to following me.
