Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron Apter.
Alright, thank you for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us how you got started?
In 2013 I was working as a full-time touring musician based out of Chicago when I decided to take a brief hiatus from the road to train for an Ironman triathlon. While on a cycling training ride, I was hit head-on by a wrong-way moving van and, as a result, suffered several severe injuries. Multiple doctors told me that it was unlikely that I would resume my musical or athletic career soon, if at all. During the next year of rehab, I bet on myself and invested in an educational path in corrective exercise and pain management, primarily to beat the odds and one day resume my musical career. Over the next several years, I focused on developing and refining my rehab and fitness skills, primarily working with athletes. Everything changed during the COVID pandemic when I ceased working with athletes in person. During that time, I met my partner, reevaluated my life, and moved to Nashville to bring my rehab work to my first love: music. At first, I was unsure if there would be a demand for my services here. Now, I’m kicking myself for not having made this move sooner! Nashville is a music town, and I’m servicing a huge blind spot in the industry for musicians’ physical needs.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nashville is an interesting town that is wildly different from Chicago. It’s taken some time to learn the music scene here and adapt to the different cultures, all while finding a physical place to build my business. The first year was about getting set up with space and creating my network. I’ve been here for about 18 months and am still learning new things about this unique city daily. We’ve hit a good stride at PR3 Performance in the past few months, and I’m looking forward to our growth in Nashville in the coming years.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business?
PR3 Perfornance has been designed for professional musicians who want to resolve nagging pain without having to take time off from their careers to run the gauntlet of doctors, specialists, and insurance referrals. We specialize in meeting professional musicians where they are and treating their injuries around the framework of their careers. Having formal training and professional experience in music performance and corrective exercise, we offer a unique experience in helping artists find ways to treat their pain without surgery or missing a performance.
What makes us unique is the role we play in healthcare. Professionals such as chiropractors and massage therapists work in passive treatments, which may temporarily relieve symptoms but do not permanently address the underlying cause(s) of pain. Physical therapists’ work is more dedicated to restoring activities of daily necessity, such as walking, bathing, and feeding ourselves. What happens when a musician feels fine in everyday life, but it feels funny or uncomfortable when they play their instrument? What happens when that discomfort starts affecting their mental and physical performance? That’s where we come in. Our scope of practice deals with addressing the source of pain/discomfort and actively resolving it permanently. To our knowledge, no other professionals in the area or country are having this conversation. It’s an honor and privilege to fill this gap in Music City. If you’re a musician in pain and uncertain how it will impact your career, we want to talk to you. We can help.
