Life & Work with Thomas Blake and John Winalski of East

Today we’d like to introduce you to Thomas Blake, John Winalski, and their podcast, Couch Potato Pod.

Hi John and Thomas, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Tom and I became best friends during our first year of high school (2008.) We played sports together, were partners for most school projects, and had a natural talent for making people laugh. Over the years, our friends and family would sit and listen to our rants and debates and reiterate how we needed to “get on the air.” When The Covid Pandemic happened and we had time to kill, we fleshed out the idea of starting our podcast. After a few months of research and planning, we completely gave up on the idea. However, with a bit of peer pressure and persistence from our significant others, we caved and started Couch Potato Pod!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a smooth road?
Nothing ever goes 100% according to plan, regardless of how well you prepared. The biggest challenge was figuring out how to record a podcast with two people in separate geographical locations—followed by learning the ins and outs of our recording/editing software. Now that we’ve conquered our first few obstacles, we’re trying to step up our game and live stream! Right now, our greatest challenge is working around our busy schedules and coordinating times to record.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I think I’m most proud of how Tom and I have committed to the pod. We learn something each episode and try to get better each time. It’s crazy to listen to our first episode and hear how awful we sounded, recording from our closets to now having a set. What sets us apart is that Tom and I are best friends. We aren’t doing this for clout or Instagram followers. We want to continue to entertain our friends.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
We took the opportunity to try something new. While this has been a huge challenge, I think we both would agree that we’ve had a ton of fun recording and podcasting.
