Life & Work with Laurie Davis of South Nashville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laurie Davis.

Hi Laurie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
A creative person from a very young age; I started taking art lessons at age 9, was an
Honors Art student at Clarksville High School, and I later studied oils, watercolor, drawing
and metal sculpture at the University of Tennessee. I earned a Bachelor of
Arts in Visual Merchandising melding art and marketing.

Working with Glass: From basic drawing / watercolors, I transitioned to stained glass
and mosaic designs in 2010. I was awarded a Tennessee Craft scholarship to study at
Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, in 2012 and returned in 2014 to
learn how to create enameled glass tiles and ornamentation.

My “Tree of Life” mosaic art was selected for the 2018 Best of Tennessee Craft exhibit. My mosaic art has also featured at The Nashville Airport. My Nashville skyline titled “Starry Starry Night over Nashville” was displayed at the Nashville Soccer Stadium.

I love working with glass! Originally my work was created with larger cut sheet glass, and as I cut the pieces smaller and smaller, I turned to mosaics. My art is comprised of stained glass and tiles. I enjoy exploring the subtle differences of the opaque and clear glass, and my art has also transitioned to layered 3-D pieces in the last few years.

I create and work out of my home studio, do numerous commissions, and sell my work at craft shows. I have taught mosaic classes for Hoamsy, at the Gordon Jewish Center, and for students at Travelers Rest.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Transitioning from watercolor to glass was a huge change! It is challenging to make art with a physical medium that must be created 1 piece at a time. Learning to master soldering also took quite a bit of trial and error. As I worked with glass, it was intriguing to see how differently adhering glass to a substrate acted and looked in comparison to translucent glass being hung with light shining through the design ~ just a new way of looking and thinking. Also, holding small bits of glass and nipping it with cutters creates more opportunity to have numerous cuts 🙂

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I love working with glass because it is unique and different. My grandfather was a scientific glass blower and made many small items such swans, little pigs, and other animals for me as a child. His talent for blowing and shaping glass created a love for this medium. My journey from 2D to 3D has been challenging and very exciting as well. Each project or commission brings new ideas and challenges. Mosaic is fun, creative art form, and if you love solving puzzles, you might find a new hobby or professional yourself!
