Life & Work with Martessia Williams of Worldwide

Today we’d like to introduce you to Martessia Williams.

Hi Martessia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
It all began with a $7,000 purchase and quitting my job. Most smart people would never consider doing those two things in the same sentence (especially when your job is your only source of income.) However, I did. And I’m glad I did. I decided that day, I was going to do what I loved to do. Working a 9-5 for an employer, being underpaid, and only having 2 days to myself was not what I loved to do. I love to film. I love the camera. I love freedom and creativity. I love the ability to capture and re-deliver time. I love generating revenue for doing it. That day, I constructed how I wanted my life to be. I was sure I wanted to be a Videographer. Once I made that decision, I got out there and started shooting. Over time I found my niche. I found a mentor. I learned. I truly went to work–and here I am doing what I love full time.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has its challenges. Especially starting out. No one knows you. You have no portfolio. But you have to start somewhere right? Getting out there is one thing, but staying out there is another. The most challenging thing for any shooter is to stay booked, and to stay busy. Always remembering you still have to pay rent. When you’re booked, life’s good. But what happens when you’re not booked? I had to learn how to make the best of both busy, and non-busy times. Additionally, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone back and forth between working full-time at a job, and working for myself. All I can say is, I didn’t get it right the first time, and it takes continued effort, resiliency, and creating from confidence.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Videography first. Being a lady cameraman, and including myself in the function is what makes me stand out. To me, it’s not just about shooting. It’s about being addressed by name versus my title. It’s about teamwork. Being excited for what’s next. It’s about being the first person on the dance floor to get the crowd going. It’s reminding the bride how beautiful she is, or encouraging someone to pursue their dreams. I’m honored to have the privilege to be a part of someone else’s special moment. That’s the separation factor. When we do business, we’re locked-in. I take the time to really get to know the clients. So I am able to create their visions through the lens. I love working with people, encouraging the flow of creativity, and helping people turn their ideas into reality. To me it’s not just a job. It’s a way of life. Constantly moving. Constantly shooting. Destinations are unlimited. It’s almost like magic.

What matters most to you?
My relationship with God, freedom, and time. When it comes to God, all I’ll only say this: When I pray, and align my actions, the outcome 100% of the time is 10x better than whatever I try to do alone. Things work a lot better when God is involved. Freedom and time, you can never put price on. Being free is not only doing what you HAVE to do.” But is about living a full life, and doing things you WANT to do. Trading less time for more money. Spending more time with friends, and family. Celebrating, creating, relaxing, and achieving. It’s not just work, work, work, sleep, and work some more. A camera, and my valiant effort to create has allowed me to spend more time with people I love. It’s helped me to build relationships. Also to have fun and earn while doing it. I get the opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives. I truly love what I do. Partnering with God and handling the business is what I strive for every single day. It’s important I carry those values into my work in order to be at my best!
