Life & Work with Schirra Jobe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Schirra Jobe.

Hi Schirra, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my curiosity about design and illustration when I was five years old. I would always ask my father to draw a picture of Spider-Man for me. He is my favorite superhero!

After a few minutes of waiting, I’d get the drawing from my father and admire it wishing I could do the things he could. I then would realize I have a light that helps me trace things and I would end up tracing the character my father drew!

A few years went by and I was eventually developing my own easy way of drawing things. I got into a show called TMNT (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) and would make my own little characters and give them short adventures to go on.

I even made a comic book out of it! I then got into anime which has a lot of genres and characters to choose from, I made my own characters in an anime style and would practice and practice. In high school and some of middle school, I got into Graphic Design. I learned that I can turn some of my characters into vector art, but I really didn’t know how to do it until I graduated.

I went to college at Western Kentucky University and started to learn more about illustrations, color theory, painting, and graphic design, my majors. I experimented with a lot of things and came out with a better understanding of what I can do and how to incorporate my illustrations with graphic design

. I can say that where I am. right now as a graphic designer is not what I expected when I was five!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was definitely NOT a smooth ride. I have little confidence in my ability as a graphic designer and would contemplate if I could really be great.

My Freshman year and Sophomore year of college were tough. I didn’t really understand design principles and some of the things I created didn’t look as great as how I envisioned them. My grades were well though at least, A’s and B’s!

After those two years, I decided to spend my summers practicing my craft so I could show up to class the next semester better! It paid off I was a better illustrator and graphic designer! I also was better at thinking of more creative ways to give a solution to college projects.

My illustrative and graphic classes even gave me an extra boost in how to approach my projects and freelance jobs.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in Illustrations, poster design, and logo design! I can help customers push an idea across to their audience through all of these areas! Anything they need for their business, I will give them the best options available!

I am most proud of a project I did for myself last year. I was going through a tough time all around it seemed and my only outlet was illustrating and making graphics about how I felt at the time. That project was called, “Gentle Rune”. It was a series of “letters” I wrote about past situations and what I wanted to do in the future.

What sets me apart from others is that I’m willing to go the extra mile in helping my customers create something grand for their business or event. I can actually send them sketches of something a customer would want and develop it into a few options they can choose from.

I can do paintings and animated gifs as well!

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
There are plenty of things that make me happy, for instance, a good pizza will always make me happy! Family & friends make me happy even when they can be a bit annoying at times.

Good exercise can make me happy because it helps me feel productive even on days when I don’t necessarily have to be doing anything. However, I think the thing that makes me most happy is illustration!

I can draw when I’m sad, angry, or neutral. It can really bring some things out and leave me with a sense of accomplishment when I create something that I deem great!
